Brian saying HELLO EVERYBODY

Recommended Posts

New guy here, Hi tongue0015.gif

I have been a Carver user since sometime before 1980, when I bought my C-4000 and M400a.  I also now have a TFM-42 and TX-2.  I liked the C-4000 so much that when my first one was stolen after less than a year, I took the insurance money and went and bought another without even looking at anything else.

Although I love the C-4000, it is certainly showing its age.  I have had to fix it several times over the past five years or so, and currently the delay board is out awaiting repair, and something has gone haywire in the TT amp.  And if you've ever worked on one of these, you know they are mechanically not the easiest to take apart and put back together.  So looking around this site, I'm thinking of trying something else.

Maybe I'll try to get a used C-1 and rework it.  That seems to be a popular one here, and looks much simpler to work on.  And I for one sometimes really enjoy the sonic holography, even though I know that opinion is not shared universally.  So signing up to do some further research and share my experiences.

Cheers and good sound.

Brian welcome to the site, glad you found us and decided to join in on the fun.

The C-1 is an excellent option with the BillD upgrades, also our techs have sourced parts to add a remote control to the C1.
They come in C-1  (anodized silver face) / C-11 (black face)

Basically both are the same inside.

It was due to going from the M series amps to TFM series which were black.
The C-1 also has an excellent phono output and with the BillD mod, it takes it to another level.

We like audio porn so pictures of your rig would be awesome and tell us what types of music/bands/artists do you enjoy listening to.

Thanks for the welcome everybody.

I'll try to get a picture up of the current setup. But I had to put my first post up after pulling out the laptop, as for some reason my iPad doesn't want to display the forum right. Anyone have anything ideas about that? Pictures will be much easier with the iPad.

On the delay board (I think Dennis asked), it's been out for at least 6 months now so obviously not really important. But I did like it sometimes for some recordings, but it is one of those things that you can overdo. When it is set right you really don't hear it, but if you turn it off you can tell that it is missing. But I only used it less than 10% of the time.

I've been looking over the BillD mods info, and there sure are a lot of posts about this. I was a wondering something about this, did anyone ever mark up a schematic of what was changed? I am curious if the input impedance was changed for any of the opamps when going from the RC4136 to the OPA2134. I can figure it out from the parts lists, but a schematic would be nice if it is out there and I just haven't found it yet.

Thanks again for the nice welcome.

Welcome to the site - lots of information and great help here on this site - glad you found it.

If you are ready to go straight two-channel, (no delay, no extra surround amp like in the C4000) then a C-1, or a C-1 with a BillD mod may be a nice alternative to experience.

I use several systems, and one has a 4000t preamp, and I use the delay feature, but I may be an anomaly - I also like using my Carver H-9AV from time to time. These Carver surround sound features were early market entries that Dolby won out over (one way to look at it) - but I like them for my music listening experience.

Keep your C-4000, once you get the board back, just begin to nurture and feed your OCCD (obsessive Carver collecting disorder) by adding an alternative.  Thumb up

Welcome Brian!  I too have the C-4000 and love it!  I have not had to do any work on mine yet, although a refresh is in order in the near future.  I have recently uploaded an updated service manual if you decide to do your own work that has the parts list and all the schematics I have found for it.  Glad you found us.  Enjoy the stay and the conversation......grin

For those of you that asked for a picture, I have one of my current system here on this computer.  Any idea on how to post a picture on this forum using an old macbook?

Can you use THIS post as a reference? As long Safari works as does JavaScript, you should be fine. Otherwise you can always download FireFox and use it to post. You will run into issues, if your Mac is running anything older them Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
