Spontaneous Music - Post What Moves You

For some reason, I am drawn to spontaneous music. As a kid, playing in a string quartet, we did this all the time..., but that predated everyone with a smart phone. I may have one or two Kodachrome snap shots of that history. Today, everyone has a movie camera in their smart phone. The multiplier-effect to share a moving example that occurred yesterday or last year in a distant location to move people on the other side of the globe is an incredible and powerful thing of Art and Beauty.

What is spontaneous music? Anything that comes together in a public place, even if staged - it's spontaneous unexpected art for the observer/listener.

This goes back aways, and I'm showing my age. It came out in the 60′s and was quickly banned by many radio stations. Even back then, I couldn't imagine why, unless the lyrics struck a little too close to home.

It was a turbulent time. The nation was divided by the Vietnam War and civil rights. Our inner cities were going to hell, crime was rampant, and yet the federal government was spending a shit ton of money putting men into space. Our government was openly lying about one thing, when the reality of the situation was staring us right in the face. And yet most of us lapped it up because hey, our government would never lie to us, right?

It's almost hard to believe he was at one time part of the sugary sweet New Christy Minstrels, but it wasn't until Barry McGuire went solo and recorded Eve of Destruction that he became famous.

There are several songs I no longer care to hear. Played to death. NOT bad songs, mind you, just waaaaay overplayed. Here's my top five:

#1. 'Stairway to Heaven' by Led Zeppelin. "Not again!"

#2. 'Freebird' by Lynyrd Skynyrd. "Lord have Mercy!"

#3. 'Hotel California' by The Eagles. OK, so I can still listen to the Hell Freezes Over version.

#4. 'Purple Rain' by Prince. Change the station.

#5. 'Devil Inside' by INXS. Hey! They have lots more songs!
