  1. Hmmm, this is what I see on Chrome: Send me a screenshot, I might be able to fix it. Unfortunately, the Chatbox mention doesn't work the same as the forum, all it does is highlight the post for you, and if you have browser notifications on, it will probably 'ding' you. But the Chatbox is a plug-in, it's actually not part of the forum engine.
  2. All - I've noticed that some 'mention' attempts are not being done properly. When you want to mention a member, start by typing a '@' symbol, then enter the member name. You should see a drop down menu appear. If the drop down doesn't appear, then the editor doesn't recognize you are attempting a 'mention'. Try backspacing to the last 'return' (the end of line) or last word typed and try again. Enter the '@' symbol then type the first letter or two of the member's name. The member's name will appear in the drop down menu, select it, then continue typing as normal. The member name will be highlighted, like this: @RichP714 Rich will receive a notification (according to his preferences) to the post he was mentioned in.   4. I would be willing to look into this further, but there is no 'ah ha' moment here for me. Nothing like the Unified Field Theory, which was a major break-through in our understanding of the universe. It brought us much closer to 'seeing' what the universe is made out of. It's a clear idea about how the universe evolved over time, even if its fundamental origin (that is, what was the universe really like under Super Unity) is not understood. We still have nothing that unifies gravity with the other forces, though it seems appropriate that it should somehow. Perhaps I'm just looking at this incorrectly. There was a time when talking about the Big Bang was synonymous with the question of existence. But perhaps 'science' has finally come to realize that it's really not interested in explaining that, and I feel that is a HUGE step forward to better science.
  5. That's no different than a scientist saying it came from primordial egg. I'm not doubting there were fields and quantum mechanical things going on, that is obvious because there is nothing else we know of more fundamental. It's not comprehensive if you ask the real question: How does a field create itself? If the field must exist, because it cannot not exist, then what is it's nature? That doesn't explain anything. It just doesn't. It's easier to accept the Big Bang is the result of an extra-dimensional collision of some kind. Hawking was an asshole, but this is one of his more meaningful statements. It's an honest acquiescence to the idea that the origin is beyond our comprehension. It alludes to the very plausible idea that our brains might not be able to understand everything in existence. The Big Bang theory has to account for everything, because that's where everything came from. It's not the fault of science, but scientists trying to sound as if the universe is a solved puzzle. You can't say 'all chickens came from an egg' and then when asked about where the egg came from the answer is 'egg materials'. The headlines about the Big Bang are always more profound than conjectures that follow, in my experience. The problem is, they seem to insist that the early universe was basically unintelligent. It can't be. Nature and everything in it has incredible intelligence. But even with all the intelligence that governs all interactions, we know that cause and effect, the very basis of all scientific thinking, is immutable. Nothing causes itself (Hawking tried to sidestep this with that whole idea about particles popping into and out of existence...we all know that scientists are NOT satisfied with the idea that fundamental particles just 'happen'. If particles can cause themselves to 'blink in' randomly, then everything we think we know about physics is completely wrong). Some may resort to 'well, the laws of physics break down at a certain point'. Okay so was it pure chaos then? It's actually a decent starting point, because in all infinities a chaos system has no limits, including the possibility of becoming a very strictly ordered and ordinary universe. It only had to happen once.
  6. Meh - it doesn't even touch the Big Question. I'm still waiting for a scientist to explain where the laws come from. It's one thing to go on and on and on about smaller and smaller causes and effects, which philosophically, will never stop ('matter is that which has parts'). The nature of energy and time are what make the Big Bang worth thinking about. How is it that the universe obeys such immutable and predicable laws? The complexity is so profound that the existence of the universe is observed and studied by itself (us). Then again, subjective phenomena may not be created, but uncreated.

Can make music sound shrill, dull, boomy, etc. </div> <p> <strong></strong> </p> <div> <strong><a rel=""><br> Comb filtering </a></strong><br> A filter that reduces the frequency response at a fundamental tone and all of its odd harmonics. If a signal is combined with its duplicate, except that the duplicate is delayed by a path-length difference d (a time-delay of d divided by the speed of sound) the two signals will cancel at all frequencies where d is an odd multiple of half of the wavelength. For example, if d=12 inches, cancellation will occur at wavelengths of 24, 8, 4.8, etc. inches, corresponding to frequencies of 565, 1695, 2825, etc. Hz. If these frequencies are plotted as vertical lines on a linear frequency scale, it will look something like the teeth of a comb. There is a doubling of the sound pressure at the frequencies between these teeth. The overall result is a roller-coaster frequency response. </div> <div> <strong><a rel=""><br> Cone</a> </strong><br> The cone-shaped part of a loudspeaker driver that moves the air. Made of paper, polypropylene, or recently out of high-tech materials such as Kevlar. See a <a href="http://www.silcom.com/~aludwig/images/driver.gif" rel="external nofollow">cut-away drawing of a driver</a> (8.2 kb). </div> <div> &nbsp; </div> <div> <strong><a rel="">Convolution</a> </strong><br> A mathematical process. To convolve a 128-point <a href="#Head_related_tf" rel="">HRTF</a> with a sound wave, both functions must be sampled at the same rate, e.g. 44,100 samples per second. The 128 HRTF samples then cover a time period of 2.9 milliseconds. The HRTF samples are first flipped in time. They are then aligned with the first 128 sound wave samples. Paired samples are multiplied together, and the 128 products are added together to create one new HRTF-processed time sample. The HRTF is then shifted one notch to align with sound samples 2-129, and another multiply and add is performed. This shift, multiply, and add is repeated until you run out of sound samples. Since a 5-second sound segment has 220,500 samples, we are talking about 28 million multiplications! </div> <p> <strong></strong> </p> <div> <strong><a rel=""><br> Critical Band</a> </strong><br> The ear behaves as if it contains a bank of filters, each filter passing frequencies within the critical band. Above 1 kHz the critical bandwidth is close to 1/6 octave. Below 100 Hz it is approximately 30 Hz. Two tones separated by more than a critical bandwidth are received by the cochlea more-or-less independently. Within a critical band a louder tone can make a softer tone inaudible, which is called &quot;masking&quot; </div> <p> <strong></strong> </p> <div> <strong><a rel=""><br> Crossover</a> </strong><br> An electronic network for dividing sound into high and low frequencies for reproduction by woofers, tweeters, etc. A crossover for a two-way system would consist of a high-pass filter that sends the high frequencies to the tweeter, and a low-pass filter that sends the low frequencies to the woofer. For a three-way system a band-pass filter is added to send the middle frequencies to the midrange speaker. The response beyond the crossover frequency is reduced by an amount that depends on the order of the crossover filters. A 1<sup>st</sup> order filter reduces the response 6 dB per octave, a 2<sup>nd</sup> order 12 dB per octave, a 3<sup>rd</sup> order 18 dB per octave, and a 4<sup>th</sup> order 24 dB per octave. This is not true, and a damping factor of 1000 is really not better than a factor of 200, as shown in the section on <a href="http://www.silcom.com/~aludwig/Sysdes/Thiel_small_analysis.htm#Crossover_cable_effects" rel="external nofollow">Thiele-Small analysis</a>. </div> <p> <strong></strong> </p> <div> <strong><a rel=""><br> dB</a></strong><br> A logarithmic scale. A 3 dB increase means twice as much power; a 6 dB increase means 4 times as much. A 60 dB increase is one-million times as much, and a 120 dB increase is one-million times one-million as much power. </div> <p> <strong></strong> </p> <div> <strong><a rel=""><br> Degrees of freedom</a></strong><br> The number of independent variables that must be specified to determine the state of a system. For example, to specify the position of a molecule, the x, y, and z coordinates are required, so it has 3 degrees of freedom. A collection of N molecules has 3N degrees of freedom. However in some cases, such as a diatomic molecule, certain degrees of freedom are restricted, reducing the number. This is called edge diffraction. Diffraction will occur any time a wave encounters an obstacle, or abrupt change in a surface. An <a href="http://www.silcom.com/~aludwig/images/diffdem.gif" rel="external nofollow">animated cartoon</a> (107 kb) shows a blue wave emanating from a dome tweeter that diffracts first from the rim of the tweeter as a green wave, and then from the cabinet edge as a red wave. Rounding the corners of a speaker cabinet will reduce, but not eliminate, diffraction. This eliminates measurement effects which are a function of frequency, but not a function of the direction of the incoming sound. </div> <div> <br> <strong>Dome</strong><br> Same function as a <a href="#Cone" rel="">cone</a>, but shaped as it is named. Used for many tweeters and some midranges. A Fourier transform, and inverse transform, convert functions back and forth between the time and frequency domains. The longer the duration, the finer the detail, and the finer the time detail, the wider the frequency range. These effects are mathematically represented by the head-related transfer function (HRTF). An impulsive sound will reach the eardrum spread out over time, and this function of time is the HRTF. This is generally different at different spots in the room, and the following refers to one specific spot. Coherent addition means all of the pressure peaks and lows of the sound wave from one speaker arrive at exactly the same time as the peaks and lows of the other. The pressures then add. Twice the pressure means 4 times the acoustic power, so the sound level increases 6 dB. Incoherent addition means the peaks and lows from one arrive at random times compared to the other. In this case the power adds and the sound level increases 3 dB. For frequencies below 100 Hz, where the sound tends to be monaural, and the distance between pressure peaks and lows is more than 5 feet, addition tends to be coherent. At higher frequencies addition tends to be incoherent. </div> <div> <br> <strong>Inductor </strong><br> A component in <a href="#Crossover" rel="">crossover networks</a>. Available at electronic supply stores, or can be made by winding wire in a doughnut shaped coil. Inductance is denominated in Henries. A cousin of a resistor, but presents a high resistance to high frequencies, and low resistance to low frequencies. A positive (negative) input voltage causes the output current to increase (decrease) relative to the DC bias level. The output transformer does not respond to the DC bias current, so the final output is only the AC part due to the input voltage. Assuming that the strand bundle acts like a solid wire of the same diameter (a good assumption), the skin effect for this wire is shown by a <a href="http://www.silcom.com/~aludwig/images/skineffect.gif" rel="external nofollow">plot of the current</a> [40.1 kb] magnitude as a function of wire radius. The blue curves are the exact Bessel function solution for a cylindrical conductor. The red curves are the exponential solution exp(-x/&delta;) for an infinitely thick rectangular slab. The Bessel solution is very close to the exponential solution for wires greater than 10 &delta; in diameter. However when the thickness is of the same order as &delta;, the Bessel function solution exhibits much less of an effect. The effective resistance of the wire is increased by 3.6% and 13.2% at 10kHz and 20 kHz respectively. Since the total resistance of a 10 meter length is about 0.1 Ohm, this increase of about .01 Ohms is insignificant compared to the typical voice coil resistance of 6 Ohms. The wire inductance is slightly reduced by the skin effect, but is tiny compared to the voice coil inductance in any case.   17. Resizing photos is super easy now. I highly suggest resizing if you post a lot of photos into a post. Resizing in the editor does not change the resolution of your original attachment image, so if a member clicks on the image in your post, they will see the full resolution. Anyway, just select the image, move your cursor over the black box in the lower right, then click and drag to resize. Here's a resized image to try. Click on it to display the full res.
