  1. Thanks very much for the legwork, sir.

I also learned a ton about digital to analog processing here at Carversite, the weakest link in my system at the time.

This does beg the question, what streams /stores the best resolution digital and what can be some restrictions (including even network / home WiFi routers etc.)

I will also add this to my followed threads.

    Thanks again.

  2. What’s old is new again.

Everything stated in your last post is spot on. You seem to be on exactly the right track.

While the 200 isn’t a power house, it will indeed handle brief transients easily with minimal clipping.

I loaded mine at near 3 ohms for hours on end.  The headroom obviously isn’t great at that load, so I monitored it pretty carefully, but it never let me down and only shut down thermally maybe once or twice a year.

  3.

I wouldn’t worry about the initial power up.

    I own 2 M-200t amps.

     One was my first Carver.

I beat the hell out of that amp for 10 years at obscene loads before I started seriously building and it has never let me down.

    Ever.  No joke.

It was the sole reason I based my system around Carver.

If it was stored clean and dry you should have no issues.

Clean the external connections with some isopropyl alcohol.

Make sure you have a clean source.

    Enjoy.

     And we do like pictures.

    Welcome to Carversite.

  4. Excellent thread with our leader clearing up myths in layman’s terms.  I could reread this for another hour.

    I do know this.  I have a 1.0t. I have a 500t. Both unmodded and needing freshening.

Most here know I’m pretty fussy about signal quality and interconnects (so take that out of the equation).

I can’t understand without some kind of separate segregated circuit how Mr Carver does it.  But if Greg says it doesn’t exist I believe him.

And my 500 is on my critical listening rig. It’s a smoother, slightly richer, more even sounding amplifier.

  5. I live in GR.

I can pick up and ship to you if you need help. Let me know any known markings or  I can snap pictures of them for you if needed.

Do you have his address ? I’d rather not Get in the middle of a dispute but will gladly pick up and ship.

    PM me if necessary.

Mods has my personal info since 2013 or before.   Gosh time flys.

Woops.  I just noticed how old this thread was.

  6. Welcome Uncle Meat!!!

I did much of the same when I was browsing back in the late 80s....I found a decent to me Kenwood reciever, and a pair of CVs to jam with.  (I still have both)  But I did LOTS of browsing into things that were waaay out of reach.  I heard my first pair of Maggies  and still remember the exact time and place.  Superior Sound, across from Classic Stereo, 28th street, Grand Rapids, MI.
And then I came upon a used M-200t, and was sooo proud....I ran that poor sucker at 3-4 ohms for days and weeks at a time....I still have it also.  It's never been touched.

Welcome to Carversite.  We all know why we're here.  Its a love for great, affordable audio.  And this is some of the best.

  7. Hi all

I am also new to this site and have enjoyed reading.

I was deep into Hi-Fi over thirty years ago until I returned home from work one evening finding all of my equipment except for my collection of vinyls stolen. I swore at that time I would carry my vinyls around and never play them until I was able to set up some respectable equipment. Well, short story made longer, I took a plunge and set up the following:

Music Hall 9.1 turntable with the stock Goldring Eroica LX cartridge

    Carver C1 preamplifier

Two Carver M400t amplifiers driving a pair of Klipsch RF-82 speakers in a Bi-Amp configuration.

I handcrafted 30 AWG 99.9999% pure silver interconnects between all components except the speakers using only pure cotton as insulators/dielectrics. I calculated a total cable capacitance between the turntable and preamplifier of 2.4 pf - 2.7 pf. The turntable interconnects are 'loosely' a twisted pair with a two inch diameter core. This resulted in a single twist for the entire length. Initially, I had no twist on the turntable interconnects and experience both hum and noise. The single twist canceled all of the hum and noise.

I used four runs of twisted plenum CAT5, one run for each speaker terminal from each of the M400t's to each connector on each speaker. This gives me an effective 15AWG between each amplifier terminal and each speaker connector.

     Welcome, Mark!!
Wow, I like this guy ^^^^ the attention to detail intrigues me.  Like Paul stated, we like pics, and starting a new thread is welcome, you will get full access to many more forum threads after a couple posts.
I feel you pain about the theft.  I built a monster car audio system of seperates in the late 80s early 90s that got ripped off along with my entire music collection.  I had it along with me after a weekend party.  It took me years to recover from that one.
You are obviously into nice clean accurate sound, so I have a question is about your C-1.  There are many threads here about modding it especially the phono section.  How long have you had it?

  8. Welcome to Carversite, William!!

    Let me try to help.....
I have a CT-17 that I love.  I have had a few small cold solder issues with it over the past 15 years...but it has a great Holography circuit, and PLENTY of output voltage for running multiple amps if you need to.  Remember the second room output runs flat, the tone controls have no effect on it.  (I don't use the second room output on mine.)

I have a 400t.  The little cube that can.  It is very reliable, but I wouldn't run it under a 6 ohm load and expect much headroom.  It'll pound out an 8 ohm load all week.....

I have a 500t.  It is a favorite SS amp around here, and has lots of potential.  A recap and a tuning up, plus the possibility of a 'MKII' (one of the masters is Daddyjt) makes it one of the best solid state amps ever built.  And it has a musical sound unlike most other Carvers.  I use mine for my critical listening fronts.  It easily takes my 6ohm load with lots of headroom.  And mine is stock.

Speaker preference is up to the ear.  The best part about Carver power is you have your choice of drivers, since the amps will take just about any reasonable load.

    Good luck and keep posting.....

It seems I'm a bit late to the Party, ma'am.  Greetings and Welcome, Ms. Raven, from just south of you in GR.

Greg and I chatted the first few weeks I started here and he is one of the reasons I stayed.

There is something amazing going on here, the more you see the more you will agree.  Some of the most creative, opinionated, generous, free thinking people you will know.

  10. Ha!!

    I love this part.

The guys here do these mods.  Sometimes it takes a couple months to get on a list.  But it gives you time to let us tempt you with other shit!!
    Cost?  Not nearly enough.
Who are they?  The titles of the repair team are in red.  There is a thread with specialties, it will probably be unlocked to you after a few posts......
You can contact them directly through the PM button, usually after a few posts to prove to mods you're not some kind of spambot.

Welcome to Carversite.  The fun is just beginning......

It's definitely a unique and fascinating sound.

  13. And what DAC did you end up with?

  14. This is the way I keep it straight, dano,
A simple digital signal path looks like this.
Source--CD player or Digital storage --are usually a ((digital production circuit, and a digital to analog convertor)) to rca out, or you can bypass the internal dac using the digital/optical out.
Many cd players are a financial compromise between features and good quality dac components.  The more expensive the player, either it has lots more features, or a good quality dac circuit, or both.
     **Feeds**
Control--a 'pre amp and amplifier' or 'Receiver' -- which steers the analog signal to the amplifier, and amplifies it.
Understand if you have a decent rig, I have found that my weak point was the dac I was using do convert my 'digitally stored media' to analog.  I have a 390t with a good dac to play my cds, but I was using an Apple TV's digital output and a cheap dac to play anything stored on a harddrive.  So, ironically, d-a-c (dazed-and-confused) smacked me up one day and showed me my dac for the hard drive storage was weak.  So I shopped a good external dac for my stored digital media.
