A long and winding road

Recommended Posts

Good Day All!

I'm in the process of putting back together a Stereo system after having sold my M500 several years ago. I currently have a CT-17 and a M400t. I have waiting in the wings a A500x and a sick M500t (it was a 1 owner, that was in storage for 20 yrs.) Yea right! I'm using a Adcom GTP750 & GFA 7400 for my 5 channel system with a set of Cambridge Soundworks Movie Works 5.1 speakers. I currently have a Technics SL-D205 turntable w/ a Shure V-15 III GZ cartridge and have a Garrard GT-55 w/ a Audio-Technica 1001 cartridge on stand by. My 5 disc Carver CD changer is in need of a tune-up so I'm contemplating if I should just replace it or fix it. Speaker-wise I have a bit of a need as I just using a set of Kilipsch KD-1 w/ the Cambridge 10" subwoofer clipping off what it needs. I see that just having the amp is certainly just the tip of the iceburg. I hope by joining this site, I will be able to direct my $ a little more wisely!

Staring in awe!

William

Welcome William !  Great to have you here on the site.

We do love pictures - and with today's technology, it's so easy to share and post (use the fourth icon from the right, on the editor ribbon at the top (using the default editor).  Follow the dialog box prompts.

You'll find the techs that live on this site to be the best, and most generous, with guidance, balanced opinion, and good direction.

And, you will soon develop OCCD, what we call Obsessive Carver Collecting Disorder - which, from first diagnosis, you appear to already be afflicted with!

Glad you found us, and hope you stick around and enjoy the CarverSite as a part of it.

Welcome!

Cheers,
AJ

Welcome to theCarversite, William! emsmile.gif

You're starting with a nice collection of gear! When it comes time to have your M-500t repaired, you should consider having it upgraded to MkII by one of the techs here.

Looking forward to seeing pics of your setup!

Actually my M500t is in the shop right now and they're drawing a blank in fixing it. So perhaps a change of direction may be in order for repairs. Where can the spiritual advisers be found...perhaps they can do a Exorcism on this unit.

The CD changer is a SD/A350 That I had not used much in several years and what used to be a little slow platter turned into a non-working unit. I can hear the motor with the belt working ...but none of the other motors seem to want to cooperate! Since it is a Korean made unit...didn't know if it would be worth the $$ to repair it.

Be very careful with having a shop work on your amp. LOTS of techs do not understand how the mag field power supply works, which unfortunately often leads to them causing more damage to the amp...

This guy works on McIntosh? and all those high end units...but your right...I would prefer to have someone who has passion and a complete understanding of these units to bring this one back from the dead. Any suggestions would be well received!

Welcome William.
Go to main page and top right above the chat box clk. on the green Carver Audio Service button.
Scroll down until you find some techs that work on the M500's and send them a PM for scheduling and prices, good luck.......

Welcome to Carversite, William!!

Let me try to help.....
I have a CT-17 that I love.  I have had a few small cold solder issues with it over the past 15 years...but it has a great Holography circuit, and PLENTY of output voltage for running multiple amps if you need to.  Remember the second room output runs flat, the tone controls have no effect on it.  (I don't use the second room output on mine.)

I have a 400t.  The little cube that can.  It is very reliable, but I wouldn't run it under a 6 ohm load and expect much headroom.  It'll pound out an 8 ohm load all week.....

I have a 500t.  It is a favorite SS amp around here, and has lots of potential.  A recap and a tuning up, plus the possibility of a 'MKII' (one of the masters is Daddyjt) makes it one of the best solid state amps ever built.  And it has a musical sound unlike most other Carvers.  I use mine for my critical listening fronts.  It easily takes my 6ohm load with lots of headroom.  And mine is stock.

Speaker preference is up to the ear.  The best part about Carver power is you have your choice of drivers, since the amps will take just about any reasonable load.

Good luck and keep posting.....

Yikes get that M500t home and get into the hands of a master! Mark (DaddyJ) will have that singing like never before. He did an amazing job in 2 of my M500t's. There is absolutely no way they can do what Mark or our other techs can do! Really

Does "slow platter" mean it's slow to load and/or eject (tray going in and out) or slow to index from disc to disc?
Does it "find" the disc eventually and display track info?

FYI: Try running your CPC through it's paces with the dust cover removed so you can see what is (or isn't) happening.
