Why did we test nukes in space?

With a bit of.........(luck?) we may get to see this again, what with SpaceForce and all.  We chose a very short magnetic field line to mess with last time, lit up the sky and killed 7 satellites; breathing fire may be a valuable skill soon.

Maybe one solution to the space junk conundrum... kidding on the one hand, but...?

By 'killed 7 satellites' they weren't vaporized; the ionizing radiation from the blast became trapped in the magnetic field line (a thousand mile or so long fluorescent light) and this  manmade radiation belt destroyed the satellite electronics; they went 'dark' but didn't go away
