  1. Not necessarily "off the beaten path", but this film did not receive anywhere NEAR the play it deserves. The film is Hell Or High Water, starring Ben Foster, Chris Pine and a straight-up Oscar worthy performance by Jeff Bridges. It is difficult to speak to much of the plot without divulging spoilers - and while the central premise of the film is a series of bank robberies, it is in no way accurate to term it a "bank robber" movie. The story is rich and rewarding, and the full scope of the plot is given in a steady, but measured pace that is ultimately very satisfying. Perhaps the most endearing part of the film is the relationship between Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham who play partners in the Texas Ranger (Law enforcement) organization. Their dialogue is laid-back yet razor sharp, and a joy to behold - on a separate note, this film may soon be "cancelled" in light of the current culture sweeping the country. The film also paints a stark picture of life in poverty-stricken West Texas, - In fact, the hardship of life in a small West Texas town is a character in the movie, right along with the actors. Overall a touching film about friendship and family that is well worth your time.

  4. Hi everybody, I am looking for some help/advice. We have a Carver MX-130 that needs help (probably deferred maintenance). My wife had it for a long time before I entered the picture (hand-me-down from audiophile FIL), and over the years it's developed dropouts on mostly the left channel that sounds like dirty pots/connectors...I was always able to engage a few knobs/switches/buttons and after a few jiggles I can mostly get the channels back to acting normal. This eventually got worse of course. A while back I popped it open assuming I could spray Deoxit here and there and get it acting normal. I've done this kind of thing before with music gear so I'm not in the dark. It was filthy inside and did my best to clean it up, but a few of the controls are kind of difficult to get to without serious disassembly, so I was not able to really do a good job of squirting all the switches/pots/buttons. It was a little better afterwards, yet the problem didn't fully go away and it seems to have come back. Lately we've noticed the FM tuner (and AM tuner to some degree) acting flakey. Turning it on first thing from being cold, it will tune in a local station fine (LED meter lights all the way up), and after as little as a few minutes to a few hours, the signal drops out and it's just playing white noise. With or without an antenna it doesn't matter. Sometimes when I've switched inputs i.e. from phono etc. to the tuner, the digital radio station readout is totally garbled. I can turn on a cheap-o iCrap iPhone dock/clock radio in the same room and it has no problem picking up the same station all day long. Is the radio tuner a module thing that can be swapped out easily, or is it something integral to a board in this thing, i.e. is it fried or maybe there's a bad cap or component somewhere in the circuit? My FIL has said he's never been lucky with the tuner on this, and he's offered to take a look....he has an ultimate set of tools and the skills to troubleshoot it, but I just want to figure out if it's worthwhile at this point. I'm on the fence about selling it off and I would be fine just getting a 2nd hand, working quality receiver. Maybe something to match the SL-QD33 turntable we mostly use with the Carver. WWYD? (Sorry this was a damn long post)

  5. After reading the Admin basics, I assume I'm a Novice as a new member. Over the years (decades now I'm afraid to admit) I've had quite a bit of Carver gear, and regret ever selling off any of it. The trauma of those transactions has caused me to not remember even why I sold, so don't ask! PTSD. LOL. That said currently I have (only) a Receiver 900 that I'd love to get repaired. It worked great for years, then one day it didn't. I don't recall any symptoms, clues that it was going out. I'm in the Cincinnati Ohio area and would like to find a reputable (Carver-wise) repair place I could deliver it to as opposed to shipping coast-to-coast. But I'm not "against" that if it gets me to the best Carver specialists. Thanks y'all for having this site and for providing a forum for the fine Carver equipment users. Like my Thiel speakers, it is a shame when the legends pass on and the companies change direction (or just disappear). Stay well all!

  7. Hello and welcome aboard. It is most likely this IC: https://www.ebay.com/itm/TC9147BP-IC-to-repair-CARVER-MXR-130-150-900-2000-THE-RECEIVER-TX-2-TX-11-TC9147/220863094475?epid=1531991873&hash=item336c775ecb:g:-owAAMXQya1Q8fsP The same seller has lots of MXR-130 related restoration parts. I bought most of them to get my MXR-150 up and running. I'm no expert so wait for the techs to chime in.

  8. John Scofield, Swallow Tales was released on June 20, 2020. "On Swallow Tales, guitar giant John Scofield returns to the trio format, interpreting nine beautiful ‘songs’ from longtime bassist friend Steve Swallow, who pairs up here with drummer Bill Stewart to ensure a consistently swinging rhythmic foundation. Knowing one another very well, the old dynamics still pack a punch in what is Scofield’s first record as a leader on the ECM label." You can read the rest of the review here...

  14. For this weekend’s selection, I offer a clever and intriguing “heist” film, appropriately titled Heist (not The Heist, or American Heist - Just Heist). This is a heist film that does not rely on shootouts, pulse-pounding building climes, or helicopter stunts to move the story along. It relies on clever planning, slight of hand twists and superb acting to deliver the goods (pun). This film is stacked with memorable performances - Delroy Lindo, Danny Devito, Rebecca Pidgeon, Sam Rockwell, Ricky Jay, and of course Gene Hackman. I can’t discuss too much without giving anything away, but if you like a good Heist movie, this one is well worth your time:-)
