  1. I know a fair amount about this subject. The short answer is no, for a couple of reasons. First of all, there are about 30,000 nerve fibers in the cochlear nerve. The neurolink device if I remember has about 1000 electrodes, but after implantation not all of them are functional. And long term, all brain interface electrodes tend to have problems due to the foreign body response of the glial cells in the brain. So even the basic technology does not have the frequency resolution needed for music appreciation. If you know anyone with a cochlear implant they will tell you this, they can understand speech but music doesn’t sound right. But more importantly, auditory processing does not occur in a single region of the brain. For example, when there is a sharp new sound you will automatically turn your head to that direction. This is an automatic reflex occurring in the midbrain and is not part of the conscious perception of sound. There are at least four areas of the brain involved in auditory processing, so implanting electrodes in the final conscious processing part for sound will not really work. I think that the first application of this technology will be for motion in paralyzed patients which is much simpler, more understood, and suited to this number of electrodes. The brain is very complicated. In the long run the answer is probably yes, as everything eventually becomes obsolete. But I don’t think Neuralink will obsolete our hobby.
  2. Welcome, but as a couple of the above posts demonstrate you must be careful to not contract OCCD (obsessive Carver collecting disorder).😀
  3. I think that the C4000 has the built in delay amps, and the 4000t does not.
  4. I’ll give a shout out for Billy Cobham - Spectrum
  5. I had uploaded some files in a thread about the mods I did to my C-11. I went to look something up for another active thread, and the links don’t work to the files. I am guessing this was due to the website change awhile back. Can these links be fixed?

    Vinyl

I have an opinion about why vinyl is sometimes preferred that I rarely see mentioned in these articles. I haven’t made any measurements so I could be wrong, but here is what I think. I beleive that much of the difference is in how it was mixed, and how much dynamic range compression is used. It is strange that a CD quality digital recording has the capacity for much more dynamic rangethan an LP, but it is rarely used. If you are listening to any vintage vinyl, there was some compression just to get it to fit within the constraints of the media, but usually that was about it. But the CD era was also the start of the loudness wars, and in the digital download era it is even worse. Almost any popular music made in this century is really compressed and loud. But when it is mixed for an LP, I think that the engineer knows that it won’t just be played over an iPhone speaker and cuts down the compression. Then to someone who cares about sound quality, it sounds better. But in the end, I agree with what has already been said. No matter what it is, enjoy the music.
  7. Welcome to the forum. If you need manuals or schematics and don’t find them in the database, Zumbini is your man. He has helped me out before and seems to have almost everything Carver.
  8. Especially for my fellow Californians - How do you know there is a vegan at your party? Don’t worry, they will tell you.
  9. Welcome to the site. I am sure someone here can help you with your amp. If you have any knowledge and skills in electronics, you may be able to fix it yourself. But if not, or just a beginner, for an amp I would suggest that your get help form one of the technicians here as there are potentially fatal voltage sources inside, even with it unplugged.
  10. Welcome Turbo, You have some great Carver gear to upgrade. You can make much of that sound even better than when it was new.
  11. Welcome, make sure that you don’t catch OCCD.
  12. The new site seems great, and is tremendously improved when used with my iPad. Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone! Just got back from the parade and lunch. Something about a marching band going by, how the sound changes, the physical sensation of the drum line, that I just really enjoy. For those of you freezing your huevos off, you have my sympathy.

    MFSL - UHQR

I don’t have any UHQR, but certainly some MFSL vinyl. The ones that I personally bought new have been handled carefully and sound great. The ones that I bought used, some are good and some not so much. For example, I found a copy of Clapton’s Slowhand used for $20. The person that owned this only played one side I think, so one side is noisy, the other silent. If I buy a UHQR, I want it to be in great shape. So that means new, which until I have much more money won’t happen, or used. For used, I wouldn’t buy unless I could listen to it first. That is why I don’t have any UHQR, but if you have a brand new, sealed, dsotm, iRobot, crime of the century, or anything really, for $100, then I’m your man! Cash money!
  15. I use many of those that you all have listed, but here are a few ones that I use that I didn’t see: Supertramp - Crime of the Century Lots of non-electrified instruments and big dynamic range Pink Floyd - Echoes Low end Holts the Planets - Mars One of my favorite pieces of symphony that I have heard live many times as a reference (the rest of the suite is meh) Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On I have a LP pressing of this that I found used, it is very old but not played much, and for some reason is one of the purest sounding pieces of vinyl that I have.
  16. Welcome! I gave up on the home brewing about ten years ago after 127 batches, but I still enjoy a good one when I get a chance. And what a great room to enjoy one in. Enjoy the brews and the sound.
  17. Welcome! I'm also a cube guy, the original owner of a M400a, purchased new when it was hot stuff.
  18. Welcome nettlecreek, good luck with your amp. I believe that no matter how you choose to proceed, your answers are here.
  19. Welcome John, I don't know how old the dirt you have is, but I'm the proud original owner of an early M-400a, so obviously I have some dirt under my fingernails.
  20. Welcome, glad to have yet another Brian here.
  21. I ran across this broswing the other day, and considering my upcoming trip to Oregon had to buy it. Sounds good, but I think that I like his album Spectrum better.
  22. My son was visiting today, and played this for us. A moving piece of music.
  23. Thanks Matthew. All I can say is, WOW, I have got to get me one of those. I hope it also sounds good!
