  1. Thanks for the membership!  I'm an old retired electronics guy who is trying to resolve some MXR-130 issues & disprove the old "Flame Linear" jibes.  I'm the proud owner of an MX130 and a 722 receiver; prior to this I was a Phase Linear/Carver separates guy who's downsizing since retirement.  I'll browse the library for manuals on these units before I start asking for specifics.  REALLY glad there's a group who realizes what innovative equipment this was in its inception, as well as how sonically excellent it STILL is in this day & age (after everybody else caught up).  Appreciate the effort put into this site!

  2. Hello Everyone,

My full name is Rob Wynschenk and I am living in the Netherlands.

I am a retired now, before that I was a teacher/engineer in electronics and hydraulics.

I am enjoying music all my live, I played classical guitar in an ‘unplugged’ trio for more than 15 years. I did build my own transistor amps, speakers and did a lot of modifications in all kinds of audio gear.

I have no experience in tube gear, but I love the approach and design philosophy of Bob Carver. His personality (openness and ‘broad’ thinking), as I have witnessed in numerous YouTube video’s, is quite appealing to me.

For the first time in my life, I am considering buying a tube amp, the Black Magic 25.

I hope this community can give me good arguments for choosing this amp.

My current amp is a Cyrus one Class D 100Watt and I have two sets of speakers, Monitor Audio (Gold series) and electro static speakers (Adiostatic ES100) and two Rel subs (T5x).

I am also experimenting with (self-build) ground box earthing with verry good results. I never enjoyed the audio prestation (3D sound stage) of my system so much as I do now with the ground boxes installed.

Maybe the Black Magic will make things even better?

    Greetings,

    Rob Wynschenk

By the way, did Bob Carver experiments with ground boxes? As a physicist he maybe come to interesting results.

Welcome, @Wynschenk, glad you found us.  There's a lot of information, here.  A bit like the a large library..., but once you get your bearings, it's easy.  I like to use Search to find things - keep trying different keywords and combinations of them.  Search is in the upper right corner.

And, truly great to have someone from the Netherlands join.  There are several members on the site from Europe.

  3. to Carver friends   (jan 6, 24)

I am looking for the best person out there to replace the ribbons on my 1989 Carver ALS  (pair).  Who can you recommend, out of those claiming to be good at this process?  This will be the second time around for me, as years ago James Sauer did the first rebuild, but he is out of business.

thanks for a good recommendation....and even with my tinnitis, I want my ALS sounding perfect again

still have my Carver M1.ot, C-1 preamp, but for a dumb reason sold my TX2 Tuner.

      Hi Dan,

The guy to reach out to is @sea (Ed Atkins).  Send him a PM on this site.  Well regarded and many here will be a reference for his work.  Bob Carver recommends him, as he has the jigs required to hold the magnets into place while they are properly tensioned.

  4. Been playing with vintage audio for decades, sone people say it's a sickness and I'm verry very sick at one point back around the time Phase Linear sold to Pioneer maybe 1980-81 I ended up having the Lynwood Plants Phase Linear sign as the headboard on my waterbed. It has been a large part of my life for over 4 decades. I purchased Mcintosh equipment with paper route money before owning a car and have single pieces of audio currently worth more than any of my vehicles today.

  7. Looking for remote for a carver hr-895

    1. AndrewJohn

      AndrewJohn

The HR-895 takes the RH-89 remote for the main remote.  There is also the credit-card remote for a second zone, called an HR-89A.

Which remote are you looking for?

I probably have one that I can liberate..., I'll send you a PM.

I don't know.  I'm not close to Russ. Can't really do much more than making the observation.

In the end, it's a hobby business for Russ.  If he doesn't have 1.5t faceplates, they won't be listed on Ebay.  If he does, they are on Ebay.

  10. Can a Carver MXR 130 be bridged with a Carver PM 900?

    1. AndrewJohn

      AndrewJohn

Thanks for asking.  Welcome to TheCarverSite.  the "what's on your mind" area may not get as much response as posting a new thread in the Amplifier section on your question.

Not sure what you mean.  The term "bridge" typically means combining the amplification of two channels in an amplifier to make higher-powered single-channel output.

It is possible to use an MXR 130 as a preamp sending pre-amp line level output to the PM 900 as the amplifier - this will bypass, and not use, the MXR 130 amplifers at all.

Many would prefer to pick up a C-1 preamp, and use the MXR 130 somewhere else (I have one in the Garage for my garage listening).

But it's possible to do that with the MXR130.  To do this, you need to find the pre-out RCA jacks and remove the jumpers that feed the pre-out into the internal MXR130 amplifiers.

      image.png

The manual describes 11 and 12 as:

      image.png

Connect those RCAs to the inputs on the PM 900.  Connect your speakers to the PM-900.  The PM900 does not have RCA inputs, so you are going to have to do some extra effort in cabling.  One option is RCA to XLR Adaptor cables are available on Amazon.

      image.png

The PM 900 manual points out that the PM 900 only has tip-ring, or XLR connector, or the barrier strip (bare wire) for it's inputs.  So you need to get an adaptor cable for RCA to XLR (one of three options, probably the safest) to adapt the RCA output of the MXR130 to the input of the PM900.

      image.png

Hopefully this is enough to get you going.  The PM 900 is a nice pro amp, often used for bands (to amplify vocals from microphones on stage, mixed through a mixing board).  It can be used as a home-use power amp, but as noted above, it's slightly more complicated than a home-stereo preamp and amp set-up, and the MXR130 is also an integrated system (has preamp, amp, and tuner in one unit) so you have to deal with that configuration side of things too.

Best of luck, start a thread in the Amp secton - or receiver topic category, and let us know how it turns out!

The manuals I snipped images from, are available from the manuals section on TheCarverSite - choose the manuals menu at the top, and you'll find them.  Be careful, and use caution.  And, this is a non-standard configuration, so you should approach at your own risk after getting confident with the elements described in the manuals.

  12. Has anyone ever made a black faceplate for the TX-11A? I have the black on my C-1 and M1.5t, was thinking of buying a buddies TX-11A and it would be cool to update that look as well. To be clear I still have the gray faceplates in excellent condition if I ever want to switch back some day.

He may be busy, summer, it's hard to say.  Since your first post in 2020, I have not seen Russ offer a TX11a faceplate..., I think your best bet is to find a TX-11b, that has the black faceplate, original from Carver Corp.  Prices on the TX-11b have come down.  I have one, and they are an outstanding tuner.  Function is identical to the TX-11a.  It is said that the latest technology fixes/advances/tweaks to AM/FM tuner design from Bob Carver were implemented only in the TX-11b.  Best of luck on your search.

  13. Well, I've been away from the site for over 6 months.  During that time I have received two M 1.0t amps back from Greg for the works (Mk II opt 002).  I sent them in one at a time and planned to put one back in the system to do some comparison testing between a stock amp and a modified one.  What a waste of planning.  I put the left amp in place and powered the system on.  The two amps are bi-amping some Paradigm Monitor 9 speakers.  As soon as the system switched on my head snapped to the left!  What a stunning difference between stock and Greg's mods!  Seriously - I was stunned.  The difference between the two was unbelievable.  The left side was sharper, crisper, taut, and so much more full than the stock right side.  I thought I would be hearing subtle differences between the two amps but it wasn't even close.  There is no question in my mind that Greg's updates are well worth it and the workmanship/craftsmanship is excellent.

During the past year I have made significant changes to my complete home theater system.  I added a Yamaha Aventage RX-A6A 11.4 channel receiver and filled out my system with all Paradigm speakers.  I have the Monitor 9s for the front, an LCR 350 for a center channel powered by another M 1.0t, rear LCR 350s powered by another M 1.0t, ADP 350 dipole side surround, and Titan V2 for front and rear presence.  I have a Signature True Subwoofer in one front corner, a 12" Miller and Krisell sub in the other front corner, and a Polk 10" sub in the rear.  I plan to add another True sub in the near future.  Looking for a good one.  I have three more M 1.0ts that I will sending to Greg over the next several months for his full upgrade.

      Welcome back, @K6BUK!

Nothing better than having a head-snap moment when you turn on a new/refreshed amp in your system! 😉

From your description, your system sounds like it would be very cool to post a picture or two in the USer's Systems thread. 😉  Can't wait to see all those speakers you have configured.  a friend of mine has the Paradigm 9's, and loves them.

  14. SD/A 490t question (and/or 390t)

is it possible to bypass the internal DAC and send to a new, separate DAC with just stock configuration?

Has anyone tried this?  Is there a modification anyone knows of to add a “pre-internal dac” output that can switch back and forth?

    thank you.

    matt

    1. AndrewJohn

      AndrewJohn

Yes, use the optical or digital-coax out on the back of the unit.  That will bipass the DAC and the tube buffer internally.  Basically, you are taking only the raw output from the Transport (CD-drive) and sending bits (1s and 0s) out the digital ports to a different DAC.   Here's the snippet from the 490t manual.

  15. Greetings and Happy New Year to All.

I recently purchased a pair of AL III speakers and these did not have the 3 controls on the crossover.

I did find a pair of 'was working when removed' of AL III speakers.

My question comes to mind, as these speakers were 'married' to their crossovers, can I simply swap out the non-adjustable crossovers for the ones with adjustments?

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve

Just saw your note in "updates"...

If you start a thread in "speakers" forum, you might get more replies..., the updates on the sidebar scroll by...

To your question, I don't know - to find out, first I would search on threads on the forum - there's a rich history of threads on all kinds of "what if" scenarios like you are asking about - from members still here today, and others busy doing other things, and still others in audio heaven.  I'd mine that information with judicious searches.  Second, If you already found the cross overs, why not try it out, start a thread, and share your experience with others - add to the Brain Trust?  Let others know how it actually goes?

The source I would check is on Ebay..., there's a guy, Russ Kall, that makes faceplates for many Carver amps.  I don't know if he's got the TX-11a, but that's who I would reach out to with an Ebay message.  Report back here if he does have one...
