  1. Hmmm, Could create a new opportunity for Pirate Radio Station entrepreneurs.
  2. Thanks Kevin. That looks very interesting. Just got through the docs. This looks like a very cool project. I'm sure it's way beyond my skill level. I want to keep thinking that it might happen, though.
  3. I was thinking about this earlier, sparked by Jim's (@Retriever project with BillD's TX-11a mod project. Who/When/What - and is it even possible... Is there a (radical) modification possible for a TX-11a to make it digital-radio possible? Either to support what the future outlined by the FCC is thinking, or to support XM/Serius. I know there are other ways to get the connection linked up..., all adequate..., but the idea I had in mind was to think that it would be cool to have the TX-11a shell housing modern digital FM. A good analogy would be like putting a Chevy 350 powerplant in a jalopy or hot-rod. Or, if you know of the modern kit car to build a high-performance replica of a Shelby based on a ford Mustang drive train, powerplant, and suspension - from Factory Five Racing (Link HERE). Picture below.
  4. Welcome Gary. You are going to love it here. No apologies for your gear. In the end it is a journey we are on. Some call it OCCD. Obsessive Carver Collecting Disorder. For each of us though. It is all about what we like best - to our own ears. Your speakers are cool. I have a pair of Fisher XP 15s. That I have to be care full with the volume like you. But to me they are very cool with their gigantic drivers and unique Avery - tuned vintage sound. It reminds me of my parents stereo in the 60s. My first amp in high school was a Kenwood. Long gone. But part of the journey. (This msg typed with fat fingers on my Android smartphone...)
  5. The most interesting man in the world on bed sheets... I don't always wash my sheets, but when I do, I forget them in the washer until I'm ready to go to bed.
  6. I just read an article on the dangers of drinking, and it scared the crap out of me. That's it, no more reading.
  7. Chuck Norris injected his blood into a monkey, a fish and a lizard. They are now known as King Kong, Jaws, and Godzilla.
  8. Welcome to the forum. And, OCCD is not curable - you can only feed it with more Carver power... I love my 490t, not my first peice, but one that will definitely arrest your attention, if it's your first. Nothing like it in the early nineties. Great stack you have there - what speakers are on your OCCD list? Where are you in Chicago? I'm in the west suburbs on the Fox river. There's a few of us in the area. I had at one time a WMC set up - but have gone to lossless and ditched all my mp3's a while ago when I had a disk crash. Still recovering from that one. But, with disk prices so low, mp3 compression has no purpose (for me). ...yet, vinyl is still my preferred format. Enjoy the music!
  9. Welcome to the site Radek. Awesome Amp. I have two TFM 35X amps, and they make a nice bi-amp configuration to any good pair of bi-ampable speakers. This is the right place to be. Hope you stay awhile and enjoy the music with us.
  10. And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun. Mason, Waters, Wright, Gilmour -- Pink Floyd
  11. "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." (clearly, I don't understand a lot of stuff..., my explanations are always longer than necessary.)
  12. Welcome Escher. That's a nice rig - would love to hear those speakers. Oh, yes, don't forget OCCD is genetic..., and you are exhibiting all the symptoms..., Like you, I had carver in the 80s, never left, just keep collecting and refurbishing..., more. OCCD = Obsessive Carver Collecting Disorder.
  13. OK, That is going to take some time to really enjoy..., and I'm looking forward to it. Why? As the punchline goes... "There's a pony in there somewhere!" I'm going to find it. Thanks for the reference!
  14. On the SpinClean, I was at AXPONA, a couple weeks ago, and one of the vendors there in the vendor room, was selling these. I had seen them before. His pitch made me do some Google-ing. There's a number of threads that point out that the SpinClean re-applies the dirt, since the solution sits there, record after record. A few people say that the SpinClean solution they sell has a flocculant that is supposed to aggregate the dirt, and make it settle out at the bottom. Seems the physics of motion of the record agitating the solution would be a greater force - and many of the opinions online seem to support that side of the argument. The cleaner I'm thinking of now, is a reasonable alternative - that is a solution and vacuum drying machine, but is economical. And, from what I can tell, it is conducive to using a home-grown cleaning solution, like some of these here. Check out the PHK. I haven't purchased it yet, and wonder if anyone here has tried one. They require a wet-dry shop vac. Frankly, they look like you could get the parts from Home Depot, and build it yourself - but this guy in Brazil has already make the system. Here's a Vinyl Engine review LINK HERE. And a YouTube DEMO VIDEO. And they seem to be a bit tricky to purchase. The company's website is no longer up (was up a few weeks ago). When I looked they were about $200. Which, for a record cleaning service at $5 a record, would pay for itself after cleaning 40 records. Has anyone seen or have an opinion on this unit? Any thoughs on reverse-engineering it with home-depot PVC parts, a motor and a shop vac?
  15. Ditto, Hashy. What Ben said. After hanging around for a while, this preempted a lot of Q's I had. Nice structure, and protocol.
  16. Welcome to the forum. You are in the right place. Many of us have multiple systems for multiple rooms. For Carver hoarding, we call it OCCD (Obsessive Carver Collecting Disorder)..., your gear and affinity for putting things back together seem to indicate you have recessive (soon to be exposed) OCCD ! I can totally relate to the shipping debacle. I have no idea how people accepting money for an item, can think it's going to make it across the country in a box, without padding. I'm rebuilding a Kenwood 5700 turntable, and its mass alone ripped up the cover. I have two Elac TT's that were actually stacked on top of each other for shipping, and the tonearms came in looking like pretzels. Welcome to the forum. You'll like it here.
  17. Gosh, this thread is a lot of fun ! Thanks Gene! Watched more cool YouTube videos this morning than probably the last entire month!
  18. More recent - Neil Peart, June 9, 2011, Letterman, "Drum Solo Weak" ...still got it. Solo starts at about 03:00 into the video.
  19. If you are, or feel like you are, older than dirt (like I feel) you might remember this on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The early-production vintage TV-constrained pyrotechnics come in about 1:45 in the video. (swinging the vote!)
  20. HEADS UP. Best not to use your smart phone to vote..., My fat fingers did the Ringo vote..., Oops, didn't mean to do that. Looks like I need to install the Android Fat Finger's keyboard...
  21. That is my list, too. Bonham and Moon. At the top.
  22. Welcome to the forum, Chris. This the right place to nurture OCCD (Obsessive Carver Collecting Disorder). Some say it's in your DNA. My son has it too. Pics of your gear always welcome.
