    Can anyone offer some information, is there a reason signal wires are twisted onto board stakes vs being soldered.

      Those twisted connections are done by machine, have been used from before phenolic circuit boards existed, and are extremely reliable. Any problem with them is most likely to be failure at the end of the 'stake', where it is soldered to the foil on the other side of the board.
