Speakers that we like and don't like with Carver amps

DQ-10s can eat power like Amazings.
I feed 'em 400W of Sunfire.
They also need subs to really shine.
Above 200 Hz, they're magnificent.
Yes, I have subs in place. I was even thinking passive subs out of the bases of the AL-III+'s. Just put the DQ-10's on top of them.

TLS-1.jpg

"The Walsh “style” TLS-1 by Dale Harder

The TLS-1 by HHR Exotic Speakers is a vastly improved version of the original Ohm Walsh “F”. While the design of the TLS-1 is modeled after the old “F” series, it currently incorporates more than 50 design improvements that are the direct result of 35 years research and experience.

The New TLS-1 is intended for use in medium to large rooms from 200 to 400 square feet."

 ".... Impedance.......6 ohms....................Recommended Amplifier......400 watts RMS..."

"...It is our humble opinion that these speakers can and do compete with units priced 5 to 7 times more than the current price of these exotic and timely offerings. Head to head shootouts have taken place with such exotics as Infinity IRS standards, ESL Quads, Apogee Ribbons Carver Ribbon Hybrids and even Plasma drivers with astonishing results leaving many a hard core audiophile stunned in amazement.  The Walsh Principal simply works..."

Audio Artistry CBT36K Line Array Speaker Pair Kit

The Audio Artistry CBT36 is a floor-standing 5 ft.-tall 2-way curved line array that provides sonic accuracy and soundfield coverage control surpassing even the finest high-end loudspeakers.

Based upon declassified military research on Constant-Beamwidth underwater sound Transducers (CBT) originated by the US Navy, the system was designed and implemented by Marshall Kay and Don Keele of Audio Artistry, Inc.

Each CBT36K kit array features 18 Dayton Audio 3-1/2" ND Series aluminum cone drivers along with 72 specially designed 3/4" aluminum dome tweeters. The CBT36K will redefine your expectations of audio reproduction system performance!

Specifications: • Recommended amplifier power: LF: 50 to 500 watts RMS, HF: 50 to 150 watts RMS • Power handling: LF:  45 volts RMS (500 watts @ 4 ohms), HF: 25 volts RMS (150 watts @ 4 ohms) • Impedance (LF, HF): 4 ohms • Frequency response: 45 – 20,000 Hz • Requires four channels of amplification and a digital loudspeaker controller • Dimensions: 61" H x 7" W x 25" D (at base).

A revolutionary new system based on CBT theory:

Marshall Kay and Don Keele of Audio Artistry brought their concept to reality in conjunction with electronics supplier Parts Express and its Dayton Audio brand of loudspeaker components to create the CBT36, the world's first broadband constant directivity (CD) loudspeaker system for the home. The CBT36 system provides extremely even coverage and flat frequency response at all locations in the listening room.

I can't remember now if I'd posted on here but my M-1.0t MkII and M-200t sound awesome on my Klipsch CF-3's.  I'm still working on the KLF-30's working better with more bass (the CF-3's trounce them in that area).  I may end up buying a 3-way active crossover like a Rane AC23 and triamp the KLF-30's.  Not sure about other Klipsch speakers on these, though.  I always had great luck with my Polk SDA SRS 2's and SDA 1C's, too.  Also Norman Lab Model 9's, JBL L100t, Infinity Quantum 3's and RSIIIa's.

INFINITY....owned by "Harmon"
I didn't see any Carver amps in that video, did I miss something? I love Infinity speakers but would hate to see this thread turn into a depository of speaker advertisements. Lets stay on topic please.

Yes they do, it's the older ones you have to be careful with. That's when you bring out the big boys like the TFM-75, M-4.0t or Silver 7t/9t mono block amps. emwink.gif Or tubes, most of the older Infinity's are voiced for tubes.

Listening to WXPN 88.5 Philadelphia this morning. TX-11a, C-1, M-1.5t and a pair of gorgeous Dahlquist DQ-10's. A truly audiophile combo. The 1.5t brings out the best of the DQ-10's. A level of fullness and clarity I never noticed in previous pairs. Very lively. Sonic Holography envelops the listener from one of the biggest sweet spots I've encountered.
Swapping out with a C-11 and TFM-55x next.

I am looking at buying a pair of DQ-10's next week with 2 DQ-1 subs and the DQ-LP1 xover! The ones I'm looking at are in refurbished mint condition owned by an engineer who I bought my previous Maggies from (which were also mint). I would be running them with either my M-500t mkll, M-1.5t mkll, or my M-1.0t. I would use my Crown K2 for the subs. Still an audiophile combo in your opinion?

Not sure about that.

look-DQ-10’s are a classic. That said, there are lots of better speakers out there now. I encourage using them for a while and seeing how you like them.

I’m running 2 DQ subs thru an LP1 and driving them with a TFM-24.  I have them as stereo subs (separate left and right channels). I have my JBL L100t’s sitting on top of them.

These are not super bassy subs but very musical.  The LP1 is an active crossover that allows the user to blend the subs with the other speakers.

I like the setup.  I have no experience with DQ-10s, but owned DQ-8s and really liked them but I replaced them with the JBLs and sold them last year.

I have to say, I have always been a fan of the Carver/Polk relationship.  I have had Monitor 5's, SDA-1C's, and Monitor 12's running with my various Carver gear.  (Still have the 1C's and 12's).  Doesn't matter which Carver I put with any one of the Polks!  I have also paired my HR-772 with some Bose 301's which actually wasn't too bad.  Have also run my old Fisher DS-177's with them (by no means a great speaker) and some Audio Pulse's when I first got the receiver, but graduated to the Bose, then eventually to the Polks.  For a while I was running my Carver Amazings (hybrid originals) and my Amazing Platinums with my Carver TFM 45 - which was great.  Now running them with my Sunfire's though, so in a way still a all Carver setup of sorts.  I think any halfway decent speaker paired up with a Carver unit will perform wonderfully.  Don't get me wrong, there is always potential for whatever speaker to not play well with your gear.  It's all about synergy!  And also, what sounds good to you!
