Site Funding - Time For Another Round

The changeover to the new site is just around the corner.  When I last talked with Greg he was very excited about the change and what it will mean and do for all of us.  I will let Greg make any timetable announcements.   However, our past funds are depleted.  So it is time for some fundraising.  This changeover will come at a big cost.  I don't think Greg should bear this alone.  It is our site.  I have volunteered to manage the site funding for Greg.

Please make donations to thecarversite@gmail.com  Thank you.

Thanks Dennis !!! This site conversion / hosting upgrade is a big deal and it is coming fast.

Greg and I have been formulating a plan for the conversion. Along with the logistical nightmare of trying to preserve all of the content on the current site, there is the stark reality that costs have risen. Because of the number of members and their posting over many years, we need a fairly large chunk of space on the hosting company servers. Because we have to convert the entire database from one platform to a different platform compatible with the new software, we will have to pay the software company a substantial, one-time fee for the conversion. Once the entire platform conversion is completed, it will be hosted by a new company with modern servers and greater bandwidth. Of course, this too comes with a cost - our hosting fees will more than double from the current level we pay.

Once the database is converted and the new software is configured with it, we will have to perform testing and debugging and numerous other tasks that are time consuming and sometimes tedious. All of this is to put the Carversite! on a modern, robust, easy to use and easy to manage platform that should serve us well - now and into the future. Because of the amount of work that needs to be completed, and Greg's desire to keep downtime to a minimum, he and I are both taking a week off from our jobs to focus on this task and to get the conversion completed.

Once the platform is "live" the moderators will be helping with setting permissions, identifying "bugs", taking problems or operational issues from the members and either addressing them or giving them to Greg or I for resolution. We all will need your patience as we work our way through the process.

The amount of information, how-to's, live technical help, manuals, Karma, etc. available here, just by being a participant, is astounding. (Dennis selling his beloved 1.5t is yet another example of how this site is special and very unique.) This site conversion is necessary - we all know too well the aggravation of typing for 30 minutes to make a post and having it evaporate with a hosting site error. Unfortunately, the cost for all of this has risen and, as Dennis stated earlier, it isn't fair or plausible to expect Greg to absorb the costs for the conversion (a one-time cost) or for the new hosting fees (an on-going cost).

All of this is to say that this site has no membership fee. We all like that. If we are to entertain keeping it that way, we all need to donate a few bucks to keep the site as we know it now. Please, don't worry about the amount - donate what you can, what you think is fair and representative of what you have received as a member. No donation is too small and no one is keeping score.

Now that I think about it, just the privilege of reading Balok & Rod's humor should be enough for a $50 spot !!! Big Grin

Thanks for listening and Happy New Year to everyone !!!!

OK - cancelled the first payment - which was labeled "not yet accepted" in my paypal account and re-sent payment to the correct address listed above - which already happened to be in my paypal contacts list. emsmile.gif

I apologize for any inconvenience to anyone who used the wrong PayPal address.

Why are you apologizing? I truncated the "the" off when I sent you the info. eusa_doh.gif
