What I’ve found so far in world of N.A.S. Storage and Music Streamers and players

OTOH..., I took the day off yesterday, was literally on the phone with Netgear Tier 3 Support for over 5 hours in ONE call..., only to finally get them to realize that the T.O.L. gaming WiFi router they shipped me 2 weeks ago, was defective..., (something I knew when I called in...)   That 5 hour block only saved me $279.   So, I guest the value of time is relative... 😉

Phone support is largely the bane of mankind.  The support worker claiming through their thick accent that they're speaking to you from Omaha and asking you about the weather, strict adherence to flow-chart remedies, and when they encounter something outside their limited flow chart there's the inevitable "I will have to check with my supervisor I will return please wait" followed by interminable hold music on a 30 second loop. When I was a lad the sound was kindly referred to as "lift music", meaning Muzak versions of popular songs expired at least 15 years ago. No bends in the notes, nothing less than a quarter note, bass keyboard keeping the time instead of drums.

Later on this was replaced with something akin to stock music used in videos of a prurient nature, and we've now gotten to the point where the vile "dubstep" has appeared on holds, in between messages telling us to "please wait" and "have you heard about our new... " thing that I've already bought and its broken and thats why I rung you up, you treacle-laden whore. I would imagine eventually the woke will claim this hold area as their own and start broadcasting messages about race theory and feminist intersectionality or whatever this nonsense is called while we await the next person who will refuse to believe we've already rebooted the modem twelve times and insist we do that and a factory reset while they have us on the phone.

Thats interesting. I've seen those implementations before but never delved into them. How do you remotely control said streamer?

You can buy remotes. The one I bought has a USB receiver. Bluetooth could be another option.   In the past, I've used a mouse.

I bought all of mine used, have had all of them for over a year with no problems. oppo is still servicing and supporting them. I gave under $400 each for the 103s, and about $550 for the 105.

If you're looking for just a DAC, check out the first link I posted to Schiit Audio. They make good products.

I spent some time looking at that and it appears to be interesting Schiit indeed. Analog as my brain is, I don't quite understand the difference between the $99 DAC and the $299 "Multibit", other than the obvious price disparity. What does the one do that the other cannot? I believe either one would be a nice addition to my gum-and-bailing-wire Airplay node.

Oh dear, the forum appears to have gone wonky. Post send doesn't bring me to the bottom of the thread, it just sits there. So I mistakenly reposted twice more and the "its a duplicate of your last post you sodding git" message didn't come up. Have I broken the system?

I've never owned any Schiit, though some might say that I've given my share of it. I was/am speaking of their reputation here. Maybe someone with first hand Schiit experience can chime in.  I am thoroughly pleased with the way my oppos handle DAC duties.

About the double post, I can fix that.

And indeed you have. Thank you for clearing up that bit of Schiit.

Passages like this is why I can't read your posts at work.  I was recording sound during a long take and saw that you had posted and wisely thought to myself that I had better not indulge - fearing that a hearty belly laugh might ensue.  "Treacle-laden whore" has been added to my lexicon.

I only buy Consumer type routers I can be flashed with DD-WRT router OS. I find that eliminates many issues for the life of any given router since the FIRMWARE is both more stable AND an almost continuous stream of updates will be forthcoming long after the manufacturer gives up on it. My other option are MikroTik products such as their cloud routers.

Good point..., A path I like.  But, since flashing with DD-WRT voids the warranty..., I like to get the router that is "compatible" with DD-WRT, let the community at large do all the experimenting during the time I run down the warranty from Netgear..., then at the end, switch.   There is risk that you could "brick" your router..., and, since you pay for the warranty..., the damn thing should friggin' work, out of the box...,

I know, I know, I get pretty demanding... 😉   I'm used to the quality level of Carver gear, and excellence of work done by the techs, here on TCS!... 🤓

I agree... things "SHOULD" work but alas Netgear and other vendors abandon many routers as soon as a new model comes out. I've probably flashed a few hundred routers in my line of work without issues but yeah, there is certainly a risk. Probably the worst thing I have seen is unstable DD-WRT builds when new features are being introduced. It does not happen often but usually it affects a newer router CPU more so than an established one. At this point things are definitely in the UNBEARABLE column. I stay with routers that have been out for a year or two. There's always pro's and cons, such as life. I've just become used to the DD-WRT interface I suppose and the reliability it has given me at home and in my shop. The only issues I've had are router transceivers going WONKY after several years of ON time. They become unreliable (lots of power cycling needed) and just get thrown in the trash. Five or more years is a good run for a cheap consumer router. I have a pile of Netgear R7000 routers that i've picked up for free from clients when their silly ISP insists they replaced them with their crappola ones. LOL    I use them here at home and in my shop. I switch out to the higher gain Antenna's I use and I'm off and running. I think I have had one go bad here since they came out like 10 years ago. Of course all my sensitive stuff is filtered with PowerVAR transformer based conditioners often used in the medical and scientific fields. Then they are plugged into SineWave UPS batteries. All my 24/7 computers get the white glove treatment. My main rig stereo source components are on PowerVAR.

Thread Jack 3,

not sure it's a "thread jack...", all this network topology, and technology (OS's, hardware..., etc.) is all related.  Getting it all to work together is a challenge..., can't really focus on one component myopically..., just my opinion...,

but last friday, after rewiring my entire network in my house (yup, involved cutting holes in drywall...) I increased performance and reliability of all components..., and increased my understanding/comprehension of how it really was tied together...,

last topology layout I did was getting fuzzy in my mind...  😉

sometimes, you just have to start over.

That is what I have been doing with my network. Upgraded wireless APs, to gaming routers for better coverage, put all my wireless on one LAN segment. Making sure my IOT stuff is all on a different LAN segment. And I will finish with getting the wife off of our LAN and on to a VLAN to separate and secure her from our LAN. I don’t want her work (and the inexperienced IT people working there) to even know what we have here. I don’t trust them. As soon as they paint the office, that separation will begin.

While several comments aren't NAS or Streamer related specifically, the infrastructure plays an important role in my mind making those items play nice and be reliable. In fact it was my desire to have a proper file server for all my audio and video content that pushed me harder than anything else to upgrade the infrastructure. Gigabit Ethernet does not cut it for me. I'm too impatient. With the advent of SATA SSD and then NVMe SSD tech I had to upgrade a couple of times and finally have settled on 10Gbit fiber between servers and workstations. My Audio PC and Home theater PC's are still on gigabit because that's all they need to consume content but moving that content around between servers and workstations is just too slow at 114MB/sec that gigabit provided me. When I drag several GIGs from my workstation to a server from an NVMe drive, it moves at about 1000MB/sec until the buffers on the target server fill up. Moving to UnRAID servers will allow the installation of NMVe SSD caching drives as large as 8TB I guess (current max). LOL......   I guess I'll have to go to 40GBbit fiber next.... 🙂 It never ends does it?

Working for myself and from home I got the business side on a different subnet some time ago. I have no idea what sort of crap/Mal-ware is installed on peoples boxes and do what I can to limit exposure to potential problems.  I've done a few layout "re-works" myself here at home in the last 14 years allowing me to expand my vocabulary.
