The Dream Syndicate, The Universe Inside was released on April 10, 2020.

"‘The Universe Inside’ is the band’s fourth outing on Anti Records, the second after their 2012 reunion. Listening to their work, this couldn’t be further from their previous output. It’s also their first entirely collaborative effort (in Dream Syndicate history, at least) and sounds mostly like a live recording. Unlike their previously well-formed psych rock, this is an undeniably indulgent jam session – a minestrone-soup mix of Euro-avant-garde, free jazz, ’70s prog and smatterings of Dead/Californian hippy psych-rock garage. Yup. The whole shebang!"

Mike Zito, Quarantine Blues was released on June 5, 2020.

"The songs on “Quarantine Blues” are less blues rock than his fans are used to. Instead, they lean toward Southern rock, Americana and folk. He says being unable to jam with his band made it tough to stay in the blues-rock lane."

She's got a great voice. Have you listened to her album of Led Zeppelin covers?

Wayne Escoffery, The Humble Warrior was released on April 10, 2020.

"The album opens with Escoffery play a solo saxophone intro to the track titled, “Chain Gang.” Instantly his tone captivates the ear as he goes from low to high on his horn. The band enters with a powerful modern harmonic figure. The melody has a multiple twist and turns, and the form has two feels. Kikoski’s solo statement is first. His lines have direction and are accented with chordal punches.  Escoffery starts his solo with a melodic motif the builds to cascading sounds of sixteenths. The quartet quickly builds the energy and Escoffery maintains it for the duration of his solo."

Alexa Tarantino, Clarity was released on June 5, 2020.

"Alexa Tarantino is a woodwind virtuoso who has a fluid, swinging style with remarkable tone. In that sense, the album title is fitting. Clarity is her second release as a bandleader following last year’s Posi tone Winds of Change. She is also a composer and educator. Tarantino is the principal soloist in front of the rhythm section of pianist Steven Feifke, bassist Joe Martin, and drummer Rudy Royston. Tarantino was named one of the “Top 5 Alto Saxophonists of 2019” by the JazzTimes Critics’ Poll."

Semblant, Obscurra was released on March 6, 2020.

Semblant lyrics and videos are disturbing to me, but Mizuho Lin's voice... Like Pat Benatar, her training is in opera, and it shows. Her voice is similar to Ms. Benatar's.

Mizuho Lin has her own youtube channel with a Bon Jovi cover, a song from Frozen, chamber choir music, and more here.

"Obscura is definitely a more mature record. We were really conscious of how we wanted it to be since the beginning of the process, so we took all the time we needed to make the album exactly how we wanted. It’s important to say that we’ve been together as a band for many years now and it also had a big impact on the end result of this record.”

Wolfgang Muthspiel, Angular Blues was released on March 20, 2020.

"Guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel's fourth leader date for ECM Records—and his second trio outing for that storied imprint, following Driftwood (ECM Records, 2014)—is a marvel of ingenious interplay, musical sensitivity and absolute sincerity. Joining forces with drummer Brian Blade, a longtime band mate, and bassist Scott Colley, a playing partner from the '90s, Muthspiel delves into the deepest recesses of his mind and sound, delivering a program which is as absorbing as it is refreshing."

Lord Fowl, Glorious Babylon was released on April 24, 2020.

"There is a definite classic rock feel throughout the album. The riff in the title track brings Aerosmith (another Northeastern rock and roll band) to mind. The melody is based in the blues while delivering a healthy dose of rock and roll. Ultimately, this album is built on that ethic. Without question it is enough to be considered a groove-rock bible. At the same time, you realize that the rhythms and the riffs are based in the blues. You won’t confuse the tunes with John Lee Hooker or anything like that, but you can hear that the blues plays a significant role in the sound and structure of these tunes."

Kandace Springs, The Women Who Raised Me was released on March 27, 2020.

"Singer and pianist Kandace Springs — whose soulful singing led her late mentor Prince to praise her “voice that can melt snow” — has announced her newest project, The Women Who Raised Me, out March 27 on Blue Note Records. Produced by GRAMMY-winning producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock) — who produced Springs’ 2016 debut Soul Eyes — The Women Who Raised Me is a tribute album to the female vocalists who most impacted Springs’ music, stylings, and journey."

Kenny Barron / Dave Holland Trio featuring Johnathan Blake, Without Deception was released on March 6, 2020.

"The strong rapport between pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland can be felt all the way through Without Deception. Much like their previous collaboration, 2014’s The Art of Conversation, the music they create is often quiet and subdued. But this understatement pulls the listener closer, into the vastness of Barron’s melodic vocabulary and the drive that Holland gently exerts behind him, before the bassist steps forward to take one of many well-placed solos."

Gordon Lightfoot (he's 81), Solo was released on March 20, 2020.

"Like many of us, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot was expecting to have a very busy 2020. On March 20, he released a new album, titled Solo, marking the first time he returned to the studio to record new music since 2004’s Harmony."

Dool, Summerland was released on April 10, 2020.

"The first two songs on the album, “Sulphur Starlight” and “Wolf Moon,” start off in that perfect Dool fashion. Sporting those minimalistic, but at the same time wonderfully huge choruses along with the carefully arranged music, played by a musically smart band who all but underline the beauty of Ryanne Van Dorst’s vocals. One of the very best front women out there, at the moment. She has that Patti Smith kind of a quality to nail you where you stand, grab you by the sleeve of your jacket and completely get your attention. She is one of those vocalists, you actually listen to what they have to say. Or to sing, to be precise. She never says it in a blunt or straightforward fashion either, but after the album is through, one often sits and ponders on the stories just heard."

This album sounds fantastic on my moPlats. Dorst's vocals are great on the ribbons, and the bass drum thumps hard on 8 12" woofers. :D
