Shawn Mullins, Soul's Core Revival was released on November 16, 2018. This album is a 2 disc re-release of 1998's Soul's Core. Disc 1 is with a full band, and disc 2 is the acoustical version of the same material. This album is new to me, and I was turned on to it by @Daddyjt. Thanks Mark, this is a great album, and it gets a 9 on the Sk1Bum 10 scale. This is very well done.

"Making both electric and acoustic versions of the same material often favors one version over the other, but Shawn Mullins delivers excellently on each version of his 1998 classic album Soul’s Core in this two-disc package entitled Soul’s Core Revival. Disc One features a full band of top-notch musicians from his touring band Soul Carnival with such luminaries as multi-instrumentalist Randall Bramblett and keyboard giant Radoslav Lorkovic. Disc Two is solo acoustic and done very casually and warmly as Mullins introduces the story or impetus behind each tune."

"The Suspended Harp of Babel features revelatory performances of the choral music of Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962).  Kreek’s pieces, incorporating graceful settings of psalms and folk hymns, are juxtaposed here with instrumental fantasias and interludes created for this recording by Marco Ambrosini.  Under the direction of Jan-Eike Tulve, the Vox Clamantis choir - whose previous ECM recordings have addressed works of Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Helena Tulve as well as Gregorian chant-  prove to be ideal interpreters of a music poised between old and new. The Suspended Harp of Babel was recorded in Tallinn’s Transfiguration Church in August 2018."

Gregoire Maret, Romain Collin & Bill Frisell, Americana was released on April 24, 2020.

"The music on Americana comes from the perspective of two immigrants to the U.S.; the Swiss-native Maret, and Frenchman Collin. On many tracks Frisell adds the authenticity he brought to his own Nonesuch Records projects such as Nashville (1997), Good Dog, Happy Man (1999) and Disfarmer (2009). Maret and Collin often perform as a duo and open the album with the unexpected; Scottish-born Mark Knopfler's Dire Straits song "Brothers in Arms" feels like a natural here. Frisell then joins in on two of his own compositions, "Small Town" and "Rain, Rain" given a fresh feel with Maret's contributions."

Jeremiah Johnson, Heavens To Betsy was released on February 14, 2020.

"Johnson is a fiery guitarist and singer with a trio of superb blues albums under his belt, including his last release, Straightjacket, that rose to Number Six on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart. He’s justifiably proud of his back catalogue but, like all successful artists, is always thinking about what he should do next. His roots are in blues-influenced Southern Rock, so coming back full-circle to that type of sound was a natural and probably inevitable destination."

Gordon Grdina's The Marrow, Safar-e-Daroon was released on April 24, 2020.

"Safar e Daroon germinates from its dark, submerged interiors immediately and immediately brings you into the light. But a light of what? A lover's lamp? A hushed arena? An Australian wildfire? Take your pick and let your mind go. It's all going to happen and does so in spades on oudist Gordon Grdina's second go-round with his associates, The Marrow."

This album will move into heavy rotation here at least for a while. If you like Middle Eastern jazz with strong bass percussion you can feel in your chest, sometimes violent sometimes smooth violins and cellos, you will most likely appreciate this album as much as I do. This one is a solid 9 on the Sk1Bum 10 point scale.

The Jim Robitaille Trio, Space Cycles was released on April 24, 2020.

"From the start of this album there’s an entrancing effect. Instantly the listener is at ease hearing how wonderfully the trio communicate with one another, as the music weaves between them. The title track is lively and enjoyable, with Miele and Poudrier creating adventurous rhythms whilst Robitaille produces some of the most impressive and elaborate solo lines on the whole album."

Lettuce, Resonate was released on May 8, 2020.

"Trailblazing future-funk squad Lettuce returns with the ambitious Resonate, their second full-length LP in under a year’s time, and the seventh of their illustrious career. Continuing their unicorn evolution in sound, the six-piece points the spacecraft skyward with another searing slab of innovative instrumental dance music."

Le MOOD, Adventures In Stereo was released on March 15, 2020.

“Adventures In Stereo,” Le MOOD’s debut full-length LP, is a perfectly crafted indie pop record - upbeat, insightful, infectious, retro, and even a bit psychedelic. The songs are deeply melodic, full of energy and emotion, and showcase the band’s superb songwriting skills. “Adventures In Stereo” was released on Outright Rock Records on CD and limited edition white vinyl. The first single off the album, “Winning Hand,” is a transcendent power-pop anthem about life in the band. The album also features the songs “Silent Night” and “Poor Young & Gifted.”

Luke Elliot, The Big Wind was released on May 8, 2020

"Born and based in New Jersey, this is Luke Elliot’s third album, another collection of brooding grandeur delivered in his deep tones, a bit like Nick Cave or even Jackie Leven at times. Recorded in Oslo with Swedish multi-instrumentalist Bebe Risenfors (a frequent Tom Waits collaborator)  and Norwegian guitarist Freddy Holm, the title is a reference to the European storm which, on January 6, 1839, known as the Night of the Big Wind, swept across Ireland and the United Kingdom causing several hundred deaths and here swerving as a metaphor for a personal and professional maelstrom."

Five Alarm Funk, Big Smoke was released on June 26, 2020.

"Five Alarm Funk is a horn-powered, percussion-fueled sonic and visual assault. Over 17 years of hard funking the band has burned up stages on four continents, released six studio albums and received two Juno Award nominations (Canadian Grammys). And this ride isn’t about to slow down. Five Alarm Funk is set to release their 7th studio album, Big Smoke in 2020. The 11 tracks get right to the roots of what Five Alarm Funk is all about: epic, intense arrangements, heavy groove and a ton of fun."

Orrin Evans, The Intangible Between was released on May 1, 2020.

"Pianist Orrin Evans has a deep understanding of the unshakeable bond between fellowship, humanity and the creative process. That knowledge has guided him through creating a remarkable catalog of music as both a leader and sideman, along the way, experiencing the fellowship of a collective of musicians he often refers to as "The Village."
