oldtexasdog 2,366
This goes back aways, and I'm showing my age. It came out in the 60′s and was quickly banned by many radio stations. Even back then, I couldn't imagine why, unless the lyrics struck a little too close to home. It was a turbulent time. The nation was divided by the Vietnam War and civil rights. Our inner cities were going to hell, crime was rampant, and yet the federal government was spending a shit ton of money putting men into space. Our government was openly lying about one thing, when the reality of the situation was staring us right in the face. And yet most of us lapped it up because hey, our government would never lie to us, right? It's almost hard to believe he was at one time part of the sugary sweet New Christy Minstrels, but it wasn't until Barry McGuire went solo and recorded Eve of Destruction that he became famous. https://youtu.be/MdWGp3HQVjU 2
Turbo 1,401
Ray Stevens - The Streak from 1974 came at a time when I was impressionable. I thought it was hilarious, my parents, not so much... Turbo 1

Daddyjt 8,622
Look, I’m not a prude by any stretch, but this “song” from “Cardi B” (currently topping the charts) is just plain vile - so much so that I’m not pasting the lyrics, but rather a link. Read at your own risk, you have been warned... https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/cardi-b/wap.html 1

Brian_at_HHH 2,609
Yup, I think we have a winner, Mark. I consider myself pretty open minded, but that one is clearly designed to push everyone's buttons, in every way - and many times over. And I wonder why I listen to so much instrumental work, these days...

Correct Brian - I would find it much easier to put this garbage on "ignore", if it weren't for the fact that such a large swath of Cardi B's popularity lies with teen (and pre-teen) girls. It's heartbreaking to think of all the 12 year old girls listening to this toxic spew, thinking that is how women are expected to behave and expected to act. I'm not trying to claim the "moral majority" here, and I hate the way I sound when I talk about this crap. I'm a libertarian at heart, and I almost always believe people should be left to their own devices - but at the same time, I believe this crap is poison - and it's going to lead a large portion of a generation of girls/women down a sad, lonely and possibly abusive lifestyle, and for what? so a multi-millionaire rapper can make a few more million...?

RichP714 3,151
Most posts have contained sexual, sexualized or otherwise boink related verse. Controversy: noun disagreement, typically when prolonged, public and heated. "The announcement ended a protracted controversy" Lots of profanity so far, and sexualized content, but is that controversy? Where are the songs about NAFTA?

RichP714 3,151
Perhaps THE MOST controversial song? It's been decades, and we still can't agree on whether puff is a boy's imaginary friend, or a drugged out fiend swinging his gigantic 'tail' and doped out of his mind Controversy: noun disagreement, typically when prolonged, public and heated. teecelly 152
https://www.spin.com/featured/the-15-most-controversial-songs-of-all-time/ Pretty much Everything that was played at our HS Proms in the eighties. (and Ive met a few named 'Nikki' over the years. lol) From the article: In the mid-’80s, a big-haired then-Senator’s wife named Tipper Gore was taking a stroll near her 11-year-old daughter’s room. Without warning, she caught an earful of her tween’s tape deck (or turntable), as someone sang about “masturbating with a magazine” and how “…my body will never be the same.” Sex talk. Tipper was gobsmacked at the reference to pleasurable coitus seeping its way into her place of residence without her approbation. She would not take this lying down: Instead she and three other women formed the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) in 1985, which would establish guidelines for regulating music deemed sexual, violent, or all-around uncouth, slapping warning labels on anything that fit the bill. Among the starting “Filthy Fifteen” were Cyndi Lauper’s allegedly shameless and vile “She Bop” and Madonna’s supposed smut-fest “Dress You Up”, but No. 1, with a bullet, was Prince’s singularly pornographic fantasy “Darling Nikki.” The best part of the story is that warning labels actually helped sell more records — it certainly didn’t hurt Minneapolis’ finest, as “Nikki” parent album Purple Rain would end up going 13x platinum. So, no matter how you feel about censorship, at least take a moment to pose inappropriately and raise a glass of liquid meth to Mrs. Gore for pointing consumers in the direction of mellifluous debauchery.
