My updated systems.

OK last thing for a while until I pay it off, got to love those interest free grace periods. I got a Bryston 4BSST3, it's one they made for PMC, the only difference is the front face plate.  It is the best sounding amp I have ever owned. It has really made these Martin Logans really sing. Bryston and Martin Logan are a great combo, as are Bryston and Magnepan. Some people complain that Bryston amps are dull, sterile sounding, but I really don't know what they are talking about.

I did finally find a box speaker that could measure up but as you can see it really doesn't look much like a box...but it is.

I finally found a similar speaker that is basically the best of both worlds. Audio Physic Avanti III, simply one of the best speakers I have ever heard at any price. The Magnepan 1.7i was just not working out,  kind of muddy in the midrange so I took them back. After much research and reading a bunch of reviews I finally decided on these.  I could not write a better review or agree with Michael Fremer of Stereophile more, pretty much everything he says is spot on.

Those look awesome, and Fremmer compares them to Sonus Faber Amatti's.  That's a helluva comparison.  Sonus Faber is one of my favorite lines - always seeking them out at AXPONA. (Disappointed that they had nothing new to show this past April, after 3 years..., though.)

This statement at the top of page 3 of the linked review, kinda' get's you wondering:

"

When I'd parted company with the Virgos, I'd willingly given up some of their astounding imaging and soundstaging prowess to get the Sonus Faber Amatis' rich, voluptuous, swoon-inducing delicacy and inner detail. I'd traded brisk athleticism and excitement for raw, seductive sex. The Avanti III delivered all that I'd given up and more, with surprising ease—in fact, without ever pausing for a breath.

"

@Ratamahatta Did you buy these New?  Or did you find them on the secondary or used market?

How do they handle the power you are feeding them?

I got them used but in really good condition from The Music Room. Funny I was torn between these and a few others, Dali Rubicon 8 and Sonus Faber Sonetto VIII. Ultimately it was this review that won me over.  I have them hooked up to my Bryston 3BSST2 right now and they seem like a perfect match.  These are non fatiguing in the slightest even when played loud, the Bryston gets luke warm and the speakers barely move.  They project an almost holographic sound stage that even baffles the Magnepan 1.7i's. They simply disappear and all that's left is a literal wall of music that completely envelop you, I never thought a box speaker could sound like this.

I managed to get a side grill off, not easy. Looks like Peerless drivers.

These speakers are probably 15 to 20 years old but the company is still around making some great speakers.  It's a smaller company which sometimes is not a bad thing.

The drver maufacturers (Vifa, Scanspeak) are known for very excellent quality, high output capability drivers.

How's the bass response on these...are you mating to the subwoofer seen in the photo?  What frequency are you crossing them over?

Bass response is pretty good on their own, high 20's low 30's, and I can get by with some types of music but yes I use the sub . I have been experimenting with phase and crossover points between 40 to 70 hz. The sub is sealed and is pretty fast and musical, it goes to 16hz.

I hooked up my Sunfire True Subwoofer EQ to the B&W 800D's for a while and the set points that worked out best for my listening were a slight add at
30 Hz crossover freq. and 90 degrees phase. The difference with sub wasn't that big though because the 800s can hold their own well down to below 30 Hz.

The Sunfire sub decided to die on me recently.

It made a huge difference on my Home Theater system so I'm currently looking to get it repaired. This thing moves an incredible amount of air and makes the walls shake.  The last repair was done by none other than Frank Malitz...one of Bob Carver's old business partners. Not sure Frank would even be inclined to fix it again but I'll probably start there.  I miss it for movie soundtracks.

So far 180 degrees and about 60 hz seems to sound the best but still playing with it, this system is for music only.  I had the same sub-woofer, once the microchip goes out they can't be repaired from what I hear.  The guy I sold mine to dropped it and is just selling the thing for parts, the amp worked fine when I had it, here is a link to the listing, hes asking 180 bucks. https://fortcollins.craigslist.org/ele/d/loveland-sunfire-10-eq-subwoofer-for/7620856556.html

Saw your picture of sub...OUCH!

These subs are small but VERY heavy and therefore easy to drop once you 'think' you have hold of them.  Frank repaired it once he may do it again...we'll see. The power supply in these is just nuts at over 2000 watts. I repair quite a bit of my own equipment but this one....no thanks!

BTW...those Audio Physics speakers look awesome.

EQ signature is more watts compared to the EQ True Sub. 2700 vs. I don't remember the newer EQ's watts though. I ran a rebuilt MKII amp over to my EQ Signatures box to get it back to working.

Ahh, nope.   FM only "says" he fixes Carver gear.  FM does not possess any technical skill or ability, whatsoever.

He has a deal with Mike, at Deltronics in Woodridge, IL.

If you go directly to Mike at Deltronics, (630) 910-6630, you won't be gouged by FM's markup - which is steep.  I've worked with Mike in the past, and he's an honest, straight shooter - does "fixing", does not do full "refreshing/recapping" unless asked.

FWIW, I've been in the Deltronics shop, and they do a big business on fixing plate amps for subs - mostly Sunfire.  There's a rack I saw that has probably 50 plate amps, waiting for owners to pick them up...  Mike is reasonable and you won't be gouged if you go to him directly - if that is your desire.  There are others out there that can fix these plate amps, too.

AJ,

Thanks man!

Good to know the true source for these repairs because I really miss this SW...it just has incredible output, even in a larger size room.  Looking forward to getting a repair from Deltronics.

...Just talked with Mike on phone, great guy and he says as long as blue pilot turns on its repairable. Sending in in...
