I spoke with Barry this morning.  Just got off the phone with him.

PLEASE give him a call.  He needs to hear from his friends.

This morning he's dealing with some mysterious blood loss, getting a few liters of blood in the ICU.

He asked me to post something here to let all of you who know him know of his status.

I know if I were in his shoes at the moment, nothing would make me bring on the fight more than to have a phone call from my friends.

You know he tries to post an update here with his iPhone from time to time, but Siri is not being kind, and that makes it difficult for him.

I'm personally asking that people give him a phone call today, and again maybe tomorrow or later this week.  Turn up the prayers.  Let him know we've got him on our minds daily.

His number is: 443 dash 220 dash 9011.

Hello, all. Barry Galvin is my father. Last night, he was moved to palliative care after making the unanimous decision to stop cancer treatment as it is no longer effective... I would be very grateful if any of you could call or even come visit. Feel free to drop me an email if you have any questions.

I wish I were close enough to visit.

Barry is one of the main inspirations I've had, here, and has always been a real pleasure to interact with.

I only hope that what time he has is kind to him.

Take care, Barry!

  • 2 weeks later...

Another update: he is officially in hospice. We don't know when he'll start to go downhill, but  when it starts, it'll go down fast. A handful of days at the most. If you'd like my personal number, just leave a reply here. He is too weak to hold his phone so he can't answer texts. If you call and someone is in his room with him, they will typically answer it for him and put it on speaker phone. He's rarely truly lucid, but I'm sure he would appreciate any and all contact from his friends.

Hospice nurse just informed me he's starting to shut down from oxygen deprivation. The rapid decline has started. They're estimating 2-3 days. I will pass along any and all messages if I can get him awake enough to hear.

Thank you, Melissa, for the update.

I had texted him late last week, and got a truncated response..., understandably.

Please let him know here on TheCarverSite, where Barry has been an enthusiastic long-time contributing member for so many years, all of us he should know are all keeping him in our hearts and prayers.

What an exciting time for BG. Barry died 2x in his life but survived. He knows death is really more like waking up from a long dream. Last time we talked, he was tired and ready to move on.

Enjoy the ride BG! Love ya man.

WHOA!!!! I haven't been here all month and just seeing this. Last time I saw Barry was in Alexandria at a Carver meet and at Marks jam session right outside of Columbia Md. One day Barry ND I sat in my basement listening to music and picking out songs and track we both enjoyed. Rest easy my friend as you transition. This is sad news for me and I'm sure for all that know him. I just tried calling and it rolled to voicemail. My prayers with him and the family.

Well, guys, I am glad  to report he is still kicking! He's giving us a few  scares,  but let me tell ya-- the man just defies death, lol. Lucidity is rare. Confusion and delusions are frequent. He doesn't eat much, but its hospital food, can ya blame him? But  when he gets agitated, we put on music and he sings himself back to sleep. Lately, he's requested more and more pink Floyd. I sing to him and cry. He's really going to miss you guys.

@EliotheiThank You so much for the post.  Barry and I seem to be traveling down a very similar path with our fights against cancer.  He is about one year ahead of me.  I don't often comment about my personal life but I draw a lot of encouragement from his positive attitude and, thus far, successful fight.  He is in my prayers every  night.

Observation to others...  Barry and I were going to get together for lunch and to hang out. This started around 8 years ago. Unfortunately, it never came to be.

Now I am in too much pain to drive that far and say goodbye (about 7 hours) and if I take enough pain meds to get around I can barely drive across town.

Kindness, compassion & empathy matter and we really need to do what it takes to find time for our friends.
