I'm struggling because I like so many different songs for demonstrating  various aspects of speaker performance....

It would also depend on my emotional state and/or state of intoxication (and nature of intoxicant)......

Aw heck, I'll go with the song that first attracted me to Carver gear when I was young...

I’ll have to check that out - I don’t think I’ve listened to anything but the original…

 

I know what you mean about narrowing it down to one… I could easily go with Private Investigations by Dire Straits, anything by Alison Krauss, etc…

Currently, my 'go to' track is Stalin Malone off the Elvis Costello Album Spike.

 

From the snap of the snare to the textures of the brass to the pprrraatt of the tuba....

 

After the performance, they may remain (or may no longer be) my dream speakers.

Do I "hear" a diff from "cd quality".. normally no. (depends on quality OF recording)..

 

But as you push volume, the sweet spot of loud vs distortion seems to be able to be pushed higher the higher the resolution of the source file.

 

So to me, the higher res doesn't "blow me away" with "sounds better", but it does just sound good longer as volume increases.

 

Just that old fornier transform.. less diff in "jaggies" when steps are smaller I guess.

Good topic question, and I think it would also be interesting to hear what everyone’s dream speakers would be.

 

And Mark I’d like you to audition Sandman on my system with the Ram 285. I think it would be a much different experience than last time.

I don't have a simple answer to this question. Some days I might pick "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac, off the DVD Audio disc.

On a more acoustic feeling type of day it could be "Trouble's What You're In" off Wheels Turn Beneath my Feet, by Fink, ....or "Keith Don't Go" by Nils Lofgren, acoustic live version.

Most days it would be something by Dire Straits. "Private Investigations" is a good one .... maybe "You and your Friend"

If I had to choose a vinyl recording it would be something off Dire Straits self titled album, probably "Six Blade Knife" or "In the Gallery"

I don't listen to CDs often, but Love Over Gold pretty much has a permanent spot in my home office 5 disc changer.

The SACD is really a good listen. I like it to see how clearly the bell in the song is reproduced.

Thought of another one..., at AXPONA, we had every speaker maker there queue this one up..., especially the speakers with horns.  It is amazing when the speakers are 10+ ...

 

Bloot Sweat and Tears "Spinning Wheel"..., remastered.  BS&T will exercise speakers in ways you can't imagine, and make you want to turn it up to 11, if the speakers are performing!   The staccato in the horns section, and the percussion just exercise speakers 

 

 

The $4m Auralic system they had from Japan at AXPONA had a half-dozen horn drivers per channel (on a 2 channel system)..., People in the room were jammin'.  CheapAudioMan panned it..., he must have not been in the room when we were...

 

The video below sucks..., but the image/pictures shows the speakers that BS&T just rocked.  the kids running the iTunes iPad had never heard of BS&T..., once they found it, and played Spinning Wheel, they were shocked..., no more Diana Krull in that room, after we left!!

I would go for "Pirates" by Emerson Lake and Palmer.  It has a little of everything tossed in.
