Bean 383
Kevin: I can do whatever ones you have left. I've got access to some nice scanners at work and can get em hammered out. Just let me know.

Gene C 1,742
I'd like to get all of these scanned and digital copies sent to Gene and I. Thanks Kevin. But it might be easier for the people that scan them just to upload them to the library thread. That way Rich could upload them to the DB.

kve777 6,132
All will be scanned by- Preamps-10 (DennisMiller) Amps-14(DaddtJT) Pro Amps-14(Bean) Car amps-5(Bean) Receivers-7 (DennisMiller) Tuners-5(B-Man) Tape Decks-5(Bean) CD Players-4 (DennisMiller) Processors and Speakers- 3 (DaddyJT) Thanks, guys! Remember- you will be getting ALL that I have in a given category, whether we need it or not. Then you can just upload the new ones, or better ones, to the library thread. That way Rich could upload them to the DB. Put the Bulletins at the end of each manual, too. I excited to we will have some not available anywhere else on the internet. Maybe we should keep those in the Resident Area? Non-residents can ask Residents for a copy, etc. Maybe we need a "Keeper of Manuals". I would nominate Mark(Daddyjt)
Gene C 1,742
Thinking we should keep the manuals available for the public. Carver Audio will need to update their library with them too. The hording manuals and schematic days are over I hope. Am still keeping hope alive on the PL and Sunfire schematics, would like to see those sometime this year. We shall see...

I nodded off around 2AM, left for work at 6:30, got buried with BS, and missed all this. I'd be happy to scan, too. I have the equipment, and know the drill. I have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat, and Distiller, and the OCR (optical character recognition) conversion tools to make a smart PDF manual (the last manual PDF, CT-29v, I posted to the library had searchable, selectable text - not a dumb raster image.) Using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat also reduces the file size, with searchable text, by about 75%. Mark, I'd be particularly interested in helping with Processors and Speakers..., if you want to lighten your load. I'll do 48 hour turn-around. And, I have another processor manual not in the pile, I'm going to scan this weekend. It's not even listed in the library. (mystery) I also have another speaker manual, not in this pile, to upload. I'd like to help, AJ.

Balok 1,354
When you say "public", you mean that forum members will have full access. I assume you don't mean guests? Now, Kevin has the manuals in hand. Various people will risk losing their jobs scanning non-work related material at work (), then they will all be uploaded to the forum database, and then Kevin will do what he likes with the original manuals. Is that the plan? Do you need donations?
Gene C 1,742
When you say "public", you mean that forum members will have full access. I assume you don't mean guests? Lee, not sure if your joking but (public meaning everyone including guests) just as it is set up now with the library. You do realize guests can see the library right? This is what every person sees before signing up on the site... Important! If all you want are manuals, there's no need to register, they are available for download here. No need to have people signing up (taking up space on the server) if they are just coming in for a manual.
Balok 1,354
I never joke unless I'm joking but you will not always know that is the case. I forgot. Thought a person had to register to see the manual section. I agree that i don't want people to join just to get a manual. When (if) the Sunfire manuals become available, i would not want those to be "public" access tho. I say that because Bill Flannery is trying to run a business based on Sunfire repair and I would feel bad if we took that away from him. (altho I guess the same could be said of Rolands place) so I'm not sure what point i'm trying to make but maybe we need to discuss it.

CARVERsite's library will be the same as Carver Audio's, that kind of was what my thought was on the Sunfire schematics being for the techs and insiders here. But the info is in James Sauter's hands right now so will have to wait and see what happens there. Since Bob has made the Sunfire schematics public domain, I would assume that means everyone can see them.

I really don't think schematics, by themselves, are going to enable that many people to repair their gear, and thus cost Bill or Roland business. Hell, Rich made the mkII info public long ago, and Greg is still backlogged for over a year. Just my opinion...
kve777 6,132
There is something to be said for added value of the gear with more sService Manuals around. No one can find manuals for my beloved SoundStream gear. I'm giving them up. Most of the stuff isn't bring much now. They all have age issues and some are tough to resolve without help. Putting these Carver manuals in the public domain means all our Carver gear can be more universally repaired and therefore more valuable in the end. Fewer will be trashed, I think, too. A Win-Win-Win. As for the disposition of the manuals when the digitizing is done- One thought I have is that I could probably get up to a couple grand for the lot, sold individually. They sell from $15 to $50 each. (x69, there are a couple dupes)Which I am prepared to do, in that I am an avid seller on eBay. Another thought is being magnanamous and gifting them to the site, a generous gesture, but kind of pointless, as we will have all of the info at hand, whenever needed. The donations I'm getting will go towards shipping costs. Maybe something in between is in order. Daddyjt has a genuine interest in the lot for his own library. Maybe I'll take him up on an offer, like modding some amps or something. I'm open to ideas.
AndrewJohn 6,536
Original hackers, a breed of engineers and computer programmers believed "information wants to be free" as far back as the 50s culminating with the advent of the internet to ensure a platform for irreversible and universal access to knowledge. Time and time again, the broader realized benefit of more groups on a global scale, accessing and innovating from progressively more advanced starting points has resulted in greatness and great outcomes. Like Kevin said, "win, win, win." Information availability is going to create "potential." Every reader isn't going to immediately become a Greg or Rich. That takes real talent, lots of time, deep dedication, focused will and sustained investment. But those few that do, will sustain potential for the future propagation of OCCD. One might also envision an entire new and unforeseen generation of innovative mods or extensions coming to bear, on more restored equipment (and fewer fried-boat-anchor outcomes). The value of interest is preserving the (or retarding the decline in) value of the truly limited element in the OCCD ecosystem - the physical out-of-production Carver gear itself. Availability of information is the fuel to effectively do that. Just some ideas and opinion.
fill35U 1,842
On the practical side: Making manuals available isn't going to affect the repair *business* significantly. For every person who uses a manual to make a repair, there'll be at least one more who botches it. If somebody was determined enough, they could do anything without a manual. The manual is just another tool. Most of us don't get proficient at fixing gear solely by discovering a manual. There are all kinds of other specialized knowledge, experience, skills, and tools that help. Very few people learn how to cook, do karate, or ride a bike *just* by reading a book, and those that do probably didn't need the book anyway. Anything that adds value to this site and encourages people to visit is a good thing, IMHO. If you want quality members then you have to offer them quality content.

Balok 1,354
OK, OK. Clearly my concern for Bill's Sunfire repair business was misplaced and idiotic. I concede. Free Manuals for Everyone!
