From the biography of John Boyd regarding the A-10, “Jokes were made that it was so slow that it suffered bird strikes - from the rear - and instead of carrying a clock, the cockpit had a calendar. The plane was so ugly it was called ‘The Warthog’. Many in the Air Force said no airplane could perform or survive in combat as this airplane was supposed to perform. It would be almost twenty years before the A-10 had the chance to demonstrate just how wrong its detractors were.”

My neighborhood has a number of commercial airline pilots, who also have hobby-planes.  Hanging out at their private airport hangar a few miles away one day after going for a "$100 hamburger" ride... we're sitting around old military trainer WACO biplanes and gull-wings fighters of the past..., the discussion came to the A-10.

All, ex Airforce pilots present said that if the A-10 airframe were decommissioned and demilitarized to ever be allowed in hands of civilians, they would sell everything to get one...

They all had some interesting stories.  Pilots interest says a lot, as you note, @PhilDent

The most efficient road trip to see all the National Parks in the lower 48…

Thanks !! The most visited one is right in my backyard...

I've been to quite a few but not all. I did a whirlwind tour of Grand Canyon / Zion / Bryce Canyon / Capitol Reef one year as an impromptu add-on to a business trip. We also hit the Hoover Dam, the Valley Of Fire and Red Rock Canyon. All of it was beautiful and a lot of the canyons and rock formations reminded me of my childhood, watching Wile E. Coyote create his impressive inventions to capture the Road Runner.

This photo explains one hell of a lot about my daily childhood. My oldest brother was usually 'put out' to do anything family. My next oldest brother seemed amazed/pleased by just about anything, even his 16th birthday. My sister was not totally happy that the photo wasn't entirely about her. And then there is me, holding my sister. I didn't want my photo taken so I pretended to be hugging (a distraction of sorts) my sister who I didn't really care for most of the time. TMI?  Just funny to me.

Hahahaha. I have a photo that looks almost exactly like that of me and my twin brother sitting at our dining room table with our birthday cake and glasses of Hawaiian Punch!!!! We both had heavy horn rim glasses also. I will try to find it.

That was it in our house. No big production of a birthday party like they do today. My mom just made our favorite dish and we got a cake.

You nailed it. No band was playing, no hotel room was rented. Sorry, no parade either, but I can't forget a time in Tucson where a woman had TWO shopping carts completely filled with ice cream and all of the other birthday necessities. It was her business I guess>>> until she pulled out food stamps to pay for it all.  Can't unsee that. Rant done. It is a different time.

Back to one more photo (I promise). This my dad tuning a piano. The guy had a gift it, as well as the gift of playing it when he was done. Thanks dad.
