Wow. It's like I just read my own life story. We need to get together sometime. I also studied recording engineering in the 80s (razor blade editing FTW!). I dabbled over the years since - mostly in live sound - but mostly worked as a singer while holding various day jobs. My 308HOs, however, were purchased new. They've been doing mains duty in my HT ever since, but I have to admit they never sounded great with my Denon HT amp. I tested a Pioneer SX780 I was fixing up with them once and they sounded great. I've since upgraded my HT amp to a Marantz and biamped them and they're much improved.
