  1. Many responses, some a little confusing. For an additional $100, it might be easier to just purchase another subwoofer to use with the Carver preamp. The cost alone of the switching device is almost the cost of another subwoofer.
  2. I am grateful to those that assisted with responding to my request for assistance with my Carver pre-amp. The Deoxit worked like a champ and my system is up and running. Special thanks to Ar9Jim in Rockford, who was kind enough to send me a knob for my pre-amp. Now for my next question. I recently purchased a Polk powered subwoofer and would like to connect it to my Carver pre-amp/amp. As you know, the Carver M1.5t amp and C-1 pre-amp were designed before subwoofers became popular. So there is no connection that directly feeds into a subwoofer as modern receivers have (like a receiver for modern home theater systems). Is there a way to connect the subwoofer to my Carver components? If so, is there a way to connect the subwoofer to both my Carver components as well as to my home theater system and benefit from both? Thank you!
  3. Thanks, but this is way out of my league. Getting my Carver pre-amp up and running was an accomplishment for me. This type of adaptation is way above my pay grade.
  4. Man am I glad I found this site. I was up late last night working like a mad man on getting my system restored. Found a can of Deoxtit 5 at a nearby Radio Shack (yep, they still have a few left), and went to work. Long story short: Bingo! I quickly realized that I needed to spend some time re-wiring and re-configuring my set-up, and by 1:00 a.m., it was all systems go. My wife thinks I am a nut (she doesn't get "it"), but the system sounds great. Looking forward to many more years of sweet listening. Because my system is situated in a basement, my only concern at this point is my tuner reception is week. Anyone have a recommendation on a good antennae to enhance reception in a basement (my tuner is a Carver, of course, TX-11). Thanks to all who have assisted, especially Jim in Rockford, who has received my emails and texts graciously.
  5. Many thanks to all those who have responded both privately and publicly. The multiple suggestions to purchase a can of Deoxit and use it to clean affected areas will be heeded SOON. There seems to be a universal consensus that this is most likely the problem. If this does not work, then my fallback will be to have it repaired by Jim in Rockford. I purchased my Carver components in 1981 (35 years ago), when I obtained my first "real good job" as a young man. There was a small boutique audio business nearby affiliated with Valparaiso University, Audio Junction (closed many years ago), where I learned about the Carver brand, as well as many others. I treated myself with a purchase of a top line Bang and Olufsen turntable, and Carver C-1 pre-amp, Carver TX-11 tuner and Carver M1.5-t amplifier. As a young man, I was totally smitten with sonic holography and Bob Carver's ingenuity. I'm really glad to have found this site, and looking forward to re-kindling my relationship with Carver.
  6. Wow, thanks for the quick responses. I will be in touch, Ar9Jim!
  7. Really glad to have discovered this forum! I purchased the entire suite of Carver products in the early 1980's and have enjoyed many hours of use from them. About 10 years ago, my C-1 pre-amp started to "act up." When I increased/decreased the volume, a rather loud crackle sound was emitted from my speakers. This has gotten so bad that I have not used the unit in a decade and it has been in storage. I was always afraid that my speakers would be damaged by continued use. The noise is LOUD! I would really like to get the unit repaired. Any clue what is causing it, or a place to take it in the Chicagoland area? Also, I am looking for a replacement knob on the front panel (my infant son tore it off many years ago and I have been using pliers to change from one input to another). Many thanks for helping a newbie.
