  1. The MXR-130 seems to work fine now. It has now had the relays and caps replaced plus the trim cap on the CPU board. I was unable to resist temptation. I bought a GSA-700 to go with it. I have enough speaker to outfit the rear channels. In case I need it, any suggestion on where to find an ADCOM service manual? I downloaded the owners manual. I will probably recap the ADCOM. Bill P.S. I tried cleaning records with wood glue this weekend. To my surprise, it works. I would estimate the noise floor on a clean thrift store 45 was lowered 2 dB. Bill
  2. Here in 'dry as a bone California' that is not much of a problem so I have no direct experience. I would suggest sealing them up with baking soda in a snap lid plastic tote. For cleaning the vinyl, I have found 70% distilled water, 25% isopropyl alcohol (95%), and 5% sulfamic acid (home depot tile and grout cleaner), 2 drops PhotoFlow or one drop JOY works well. The sulfamic acid is likely to make vinyl purists shudder and doubt my sanity. However, records are nothing but PVC and the RYAN HERCO catalog list the compatibility as excellent. If a record has been cleaned in tap water my mix takes the calcium off somewhat. Most mixes I tried with a pH greater than 5 did very little good. I am off work today screwing around with the old Carvers until friend show up for a barbeque. Bill
  3. I have used dioxid for years. Good stuff. I also had to clean the molex connectors. Many were intermittent. When I first powered up the unit, I believe I heard distortion between 60 hz and about 3,000 hz. It got better. That makes me thing that I need to recap this unit. I am guessing the power supply caps were reforming. I have larger caps both in capacitance and voltage in my parts box. What do you think? Bill Edit: I found one more problem. The radio goes silent with a screwed up display when warm. I will replace the trip pot. I am skeptical that the trim pot is the problem, since cooling the CPU with freeze mist (I have a little left) causes the radio to pop back into service. If I have to buy another CPU, so be it.
  4. Okay, I just put the lid on my fully functional MXR-900 when I had the chance to get an MXR-130 with a noisy balance control for $40. All seems well after some deoxid. Can anyone point me to the owners manual? I already downloaded the service manual. Does this thing have an IR receiver for a remote? Bill
  5. It works, by golly. The MXR-900 had arrived by the time I got home from work. I unpackaged it in private so my girlfriend's eyes would not roll out of their sockets at my unnecessary purchase of another apparent boat anchor (last month is was a Sony PS-X600). I powered it up through my VARAC and low and behold no explosions or smoke. Compared to my ONKYO home theater amplifier playing CDs, it sounds awesome. The FM radio deserves its reputation too. Regardless of its apparent working condition, I will recap it and replace the relays.
  6. This is the one I bought: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111385562498?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D111385562498%26_rdc%3D1 I already ordered the relays. I don't think the relay failures are unique to Carver. I have had them fail on modern equipment too. Thanks, Bill
  7. I can put an AC ammeter on the variac without a whole lot of work. Good idea, if the current starts shooting straight up, something is wrong.
  8. Terrific. Thanks. One follow-on question. This thing probably has not seen 110 VAC in many years. Do you folks recommend powering it right up or should I sneak up on it with my VARAC?
  9. Hello all. I am new the forum and a first time Carver owner. At the peak of Carver's popularity they were way out of my young adult price range. The MXR-900 I purchased on e-bay should arrive any day. It is supposed to be in working order, however, considering I paid $80, I have my doubts. I will re-cap and re-relay it regardless. I don't see much on the forum related to the MXR-900 or MXR-2000. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is there a service manual available? I see there is one for the MXR-2000 which is probably close. Thanks, Bill
