  1. Thanks B-Man. I'll ignore the tuner trim and start with the output relays. The take-a-picture is a great point, too. The eBay-er who supplied the parts sent pretty good instructions on How-To for those parts, including the tuner trim, but if there is a special "tool", then no. Yes, it powers on, but zero sound, BTW. Thanks again!
  2. Thanks Rob, looks like a nice one. "Feels" like a brand I've heard of and trust. My soldering gun is a Weller, is 25 years old, and works great still.
  3. I have what I hope are the parts needed for my DIY Carver 900 refurb. New capacitors, output relays, a resistor and tuner trim (??). Any advice on a specfic soldering station you like? I'm not gonna spend $300 on one, but $100 for a good model is not unreasonable. I've been eyeing a Duratrax TK-950 recommended by a friend who owns a hobby shop, and repairs boards on RC vehicles and controllers. Also any advice on what to replace first? Would you replace "X" then plug it in and see if that fixed it, or would you just replace everything, then try it? What's the logical move? Thanks all!
  4. Hi AndrewJohn, thanks for the reply. I feel comfortable with a soldering iron, but not sure where to get real, quality parts. I see a bunch of stuff on eBay of course, but wouldn't know what to get exactly and more importantly if it is any good. Greg at Nelion said he doesn't fully "refurbish" the Receivers, but does do a "go through" routine for a couple hundred buck. I just really liked the processes Nelion described on amps and preamps and felt good about their quality based on their webiste and on folks' recommendations on this forum. Off topic, I live near Cincinnati but worked for a company in Detroit (Berkeley specifically) for a few year recently and made many a trip up there. I'm very familiar with the areas you talked about and there are a lot of nice vacation-y areas I wouldn't mind revisiting. I'd like to eat at Vinsetta's Garage again, too. It was a favorite for a beer and a 3AM Burger!
  5. Last week (Friday the 14th) I sent an email to service@nelionaudio.com asking for pricing on an overhaul of my Receiver 900. I saw a lot of great information on the Nelion Audio website for many Carver amps and preamps, but wanted to get an idea of costs before shipping it. But I have yet to get a reply. Did I email the wrong "address" maybe? As always, thanks everyone.
  6. Thank you, too. Nice to be here and I'll do my best to contribute. My Thiels are "only" 1.2's but (as you know) they are amazing (no pun intended).
  7. Thanks all, and kudos to the wordplay. I'm happy to be hear.
  8. Hey Rob, thanks. My first name's Jeff. Appreciate the Welcome
  9. Oops! Already goofed and called myself a Novice. Now I realize the error of my ways and as an "Inbound" I beg forgiveness!

  10. After reading the Admin basics, I assume I'm a Novice as a new member. Over the years (decades now I'm afraid to admit) I've had quite a bit of Carver gear, and regret ever selling off any of it. The trauma of those transactions has caused me to not remember even why I sold, so don't ask! PTSD. LOL. That said currently I have (only) a Receiver 900 that I'd love to get repaired. It worked great for years, then one day it didn't. I don't recall any symptoms, clues that it was going out. I'm in the Cincinnati Ohio area and would like to find a reputable (Carver-wise) repair place I could deliver it to as opposed to shipping coast-to-coast. But I'm not "against" that if it gets me to the best Carver specialists. Thanks y'all for having this site and for providing a forum for the fine Carver equipment users. Like my Thiel speakers, it is a shame when the legends pass on and the companies change direction (or just disappear). Stay well all!
