  1. Removed every board deoxit on all controls and connectors , the only trimmers are on the tuner board and i didnt want to mess with those without a manual , inspected pc boards for cracked or dry joints too , reflowed a few. Reassembled it all but it still performs the same , weak sound level and what's there sounds pretty tinny
  2. Thanks that sounds like very good advice. I used deoxit on the pots and connectors that I could get at, I'll take photos then disassemble the boards from the unit so I can get at everything and check for bad solder joints while I'm at it. I'll let you know how I get on
  3. Service manuals for ct27v ct28v and ct29v don't seem to exist on the net. I have the owners manual but that's no help. All there is out there is paying 10 bucks for schematic drawings which seller says are hard to make out (thanks for the link btw). It kinda sucks
  4. As I noted earlier, the AV-806x service manual is available in the CS! library. Click on the hyperlink and scroll down past Phase Linear to the Carver section. The link for service manual is to the schematic diagrams for the unit, not to a service manual
  5. Hey guys I have a problem with this preamp in that it has a really weak output, as in full volume through my av806x amplifier just to be heard. I have another preamp that works fine with this amp. Dont know where to start looking, I was going to check the adjusting pots as these are a candidate to go bad but I don't want to do this without a service manual (which I can't find anywhere) Any suggestions on common problems ,where to start troubleshooting or where to find a service manual?
  6. I changed out the main fuse from a 12 amp to a 6 amp one, and redid the transformer jumpers for 230 volts . It worked a treat. It seems to sound better than when I was using it on 120 with the huckery little stepdown transformer I had borrowed Thanks for the input guys. Now if I could just find a service manual so I can check the idle current settings
  7. Kve would that be all fuses in the amp or just the main fuse that need to be halved in rating?
  8. Welcome! According to the schematic, just proper jumper positions will let you run it on 240VAC. I believe the fuse value must be halved as well. What model preamp? Cool! thanks thats good to know about the fuse ratings. No need to change the capacitor across the switch also? it does appear to be all there is on the primary side of the transformers. Im borrowing a buzzy little stepdown for the moment so changing the transformers setup to 240 will be great. The preamp is a CT28v , I have been unable to come up with a service manual for this one
  9. I removed the amp board from my Av806x that was popping and playing up . After reflowing any solder joints that looked remotely suspicious and reassembling.. Popping noises are gone!! Yippee While I was in there I noticed the transformers have jumpers for 240v (the unit is 120 volt supply, I'm running it on 240v with a stepdown) if anyone knows whether it's just a matter of Changing the jumpers or if there is more to it than that , would be a big help? The preamp may not be so easy to find the problem.. Might be time to make a dedicated thread for it.
  10. Sansui (AU-D11), Carver(...) . A man after my heart! Welcome. I have an Au d11ii it's awesome! Cheers
  11. Yes it's starting to really warm up here. Yes worlds fastest indian . I love that movie, he was a cool guy Cheers!
  12. Thanks for the welcome guys that's awesome! Im also into my sansui and have a couple of nice old AU series amps Recently I picked up an Av806x with a cv28t preamp The 806x is in good shape but one of the channels makes really loud popping noises straight after starting up but goes ok after that. I love how the individual amp boards can be unplugged and removed. I took the offending channel board out and have gone over it for bad solder joints to no avail as yet The pre has really low output I have to turn the volume control to full for the amp to put out moderate volume with a cd player Any helpful ideas to go about tracing the problems would be really appreciated
  13. Found this site while looking for info about a Carver pre amp and amp I just purchased. They seem very well made but have a couple of issues so Ill be making a thread for some help It seems like a great resource and forum here .. I am a middle aged kiwi guy who likes playing with audio gear Greetings all
