Torr 8 Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I have a set of bose 601 3 series. I 've had them for around 20 years now. I added some hivi tweeters and 2nd order crossovers to the mix about a year ago, the system is alot nicer now. So tommorrow I decided I would have some fun and solder all those worthless wire wrapped speaker connections in the bose speakers. Should give some sort of improvement, maybe, I'll post again once I'm done.
Torr 8 Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 re-soldered and fixed a couple of problems. long story short, each speaker had blown it's fuses, systems been running off of a couple of capcitors across the fuses for quite sometime. had to bypass the fuses for now, just need to keep the volume reasonable and things should be o.k. untill I get the fuses replaced. I ohmed all the speakers and they checked out good. the fuses must have just been worn out/old and blew. the speakers sound like new now, just have find out who sells glass ampule fuses. wide open clear sharpe dynamic sound is back, finally (the bose carnival soundstaging is back again). update; lamp fuses ordered 2 for $8 shipped they're supposed to limit current and also act as fuses if the speaker is over-driven.
Nahash5150 10,712 Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Nifty! Now, did you bypass the original crossovers with your own mod?
Torr 8 Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 hey Nahash, just jumped the lamp fuse with a piece of 12 gauge wire soldered in place. I just bypassed some sort of overload protection on the speakers. when the lamp fuse heats up, current through the speakers drops and the capacitor across the lamp fuse acts as some sort of voltage doubler, more voltage less current, the setup was a safeguard to prevent people from blowing the tweeters. from the input, to the lamp fuse with the capacitor across it, to the crossover (tweeter and low pass circuits parallel to eachother).the new fuses are actually a jbl part, they're rated at 200 watts so it has the same spec's as the bose... could not find a bose part online. hopefully it won't degrade the sound. also ordered new capacitors for the cross over, some aeon and also some sulen caps, 2.4 mf 400volts form parts connexion, they're cheap so I'll swap until I find the ones that work best. 20 year old film caps are due for replacementif the performance is better with the lamp fuses bypassed, then I'll reinstall the jumper wiring.....
Torr 8 Posted June 24, 2012 Author Posted June 24, 2012 all the parts are installed now, I used the solen caps, slightly forward midrange, musical and detailed, just what the speakers needed.... highs and lows as well as the midrange are back where they should be.
