Old speakers but good value - looking for suggestions
BillyDef replied to BillyDef's topic in Loudspeakers
She's still not impressed or willing to keep them. Anyone in LA area looking for some SDA SRS 2's? Blade-blade interconnect. PM me if you are looking. I think I'm going to find something a little bit smaller. I figure I can build a subwoofer cabinet as the TV stand and then get some two way speakers. Looking at the Tekton Lore speakers for front mains. As an engineering design project, I'm trying to figure out how to fit six 12" woofers in a space 60" long. Picking up an ATI 1506 Friday for the amp to drive them. Also found some other amps, a Parasound HCA-2200II and HCA-806A. The 806 was damaged in shipping and I'm waiting to see what to do with it. The 2200 is a 60lb monster. One last thought is to start cutting circular holes in the walls all over the place. I have enough amps to run 18 channels if the 806 gets fixed. -

I think i found some monitor 10's down the street with a 350 center channel. Forgot the letters but it has 4 mid woofers. Also thinking of checking out the Tekton Design speakers. The guy is an artist about the way they sound and are hand built...by himself. -

I suspected they can multiply when nurtured properly. -

Thanks for all the ideas. I like the Energy speakers too. Super efficient and pretty loud. Not sure if I will dump off my RTI12's. I bought them brand new and thought they were better than they are. I almost bought the EmpTek towers for the same price. They didn't have as deep of bass extension as the RTi12's. I read that the ribbons get off-axis sound degradation, so I'm not sure if i'm sold on them. For bass, I think I'll look into stereo subs soon as I figure out what I'm keeping for the Front right/left speakers. -

Thanks but I need to pass. My truck only gets 16 mpg so thats another $200-250 just to get there. Cool speakers though! -
Polk SDA SRS 2 vs. Amplifiers and Common Ground

I'll take a look at those. Someone is selling something similar locally with the 4 woofer center channel. -
Polk SDA SRS 2 vs. Amplifiers and Common Ground

No worries, I won't cut them up. I have been cruising ebay and craigslist for parts. Someone in LA is selling 4 sda speakers for $100 so thats possibly 8 mid woofers and 4 tweeters and cross overs. -
What other speakers are out there that are good values on Craiglist and E-Bay? As seen on my other post in loudspeakers, I picked up some used Polk SDA SRS 2's from craigslist and am really impressed with their performance for a 30 year old speaker but they are huge. My wife thinks she can bury me in one after she kills me for messing up the living room. I'm looking for some smaller speakers under $500/pair or close to that but have big rich sound. I have been looking at used B&W speakers but am not sure their 6.5" bookshelves are enough. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Polk SDA SRS 2 vs. Amplifiers and Common Ground
BillyDef replied to BillyDef's topic in Loudspeakers
Thanks, i was looking at those but still thinking I would like something a little more modern looking. Also, I don't need SDA with a 9.2 channel source. I'm guessing surround sound or 5.1 was what killed SDA. The bookshelf speakers on top are Aperion and supposed to be pretty good. They don't sound as smooth and full though at medium to high volume. They are front presence speakers for now. I might return them at the end of the free in home trial. -
Polk SDA SRS 2 vs. Amplifiers and Common Ground
BillyDef replied to BillyDef's topic in Loudspeakers
Ok, all setup. I ave been doing some tests between the RTI12 and the SDA SRS2. I like the sound much better from the SRS speakers. THe RTI12 sound a bit shrill at higher volume levels where the SRS are much more smooth. I also like the sound of the M4.0t (unmodified) over the M1.0t (unmodified) so far. I'm wondering if I could retrofit or make bookshelf speakers from the SRS woofers and tweeters to make a much more WAF friendly setup. I am going to end up moving them into a different room. Here is a picture: The video is Kaskade - "Fire in your new shoes" on youtube streamed through Apple TV. -

Thanks all! -
I'm still pretty new here and am looking for some help with which amps work well with SDA SRS 2's. I have the blade/blade interconnect. The amps are all in transit from the sellers and I should get some of them next week. Do I need to test anything on the amps before hooking them up to speakers? I have a fluke 87 for rudimentary diagnostics but I'm not an electrical engineer. Amps: M1.0T with bridge mono switch - unmodified - should work fine per other posts I read M4.0T - unmodified, not sure what the back looks like - not sure if it works with SDA circuitry Parasound HCA-806A - originally I thought I could bi-amp the highs with 80wpc and then bridge the lows for 180wpc. The speakers only have 1 pair of inputs so I am now thinking of just using the 4 channels bridged to two. Does the amp still have common ground if I bridge channels? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Great info, thanks B-Man! For #3, I thought I read somewhere that the amp's power supply feeds noise back into the AC line. I'm curious if anyone added a 12V trigger relay inside one of these amps. -

Ok a few more questions. I returned the furman power conditioner. I didn't like that it was always on. If I powered it off, the TV and cable box were upset when they were powered back up again. To the questions: 1. I think I only have 15amps available at this power outlet. Am I going to run into any power problems? If so, any suggestions. I do not want to rewire the house. I also plan to purchase some 400-700 watt class D driven12-15" subs at some point. First location preference is outboard sides of speakers on the floor. 2. Someone mentioned the M-4.0T can trash speakers. Is this a reference to sheer power or that it can fail and burn up the speakers? If its a failure mode, what can I do to protect my system? Run inline 4-6Amp fuses on the speaker wire? 3. Power conditioning and amp turn on/turn off. What are some suggestions to isolate the Carver Amp noise AND have a solution to auto power on/off with the receiver? I'm not looking to spend $500 on another box. I am up for DIY projects and/or buying something off the shelf. Receiver has 12v trigger out. I started reviewing the "power" threads in the site here and see some good info. I also just e-bayed a used Hakko soldering iron because my current one is junk. Thanks, Billy -

Ok, here is an attempt at a picture. I took this while I was still assembling everything. The small bookshelves are my presence speakers. I'm still messing around with their location. The funny paintings were a wine event with my wife. The blue box is a RCA to XLR convertor that I was trying out with the Crown XLS amps. Gonna e-bay it now that I returned them. So far, it looks like a 65" TV will fit perfect on the stand edge to edge. The 46 is pretty old now. The Carver amp(s) will go on the left side. When I take the glass door off, it fits 19" rack mount gear perfect. There is a line conditioner on the bottom. I'll probably cut some holes in the back for vents and possibly add 12v or 5v fans depending on heat. -

I need to figure out how to post a picture. The easy way seems to only want small pictures. -

Hi all, thanks for the welcome! I can work on simple electronics and can learn pretty quick. I don't have an oscilloscope but I do have a Fluke 87. I recently got back into audio gear. Wife flipped out when a pallet of 2 tower speakers arrived by truck. It was quite amusing. Boxes are still piled up in the guest bedroom. Equipment: Yamaha RX-A2030 - ESS DAC's do surprisingly well with Pandora stream, YPAO actually works well. Furman rack mount filter - PL Plus C Sony Blue Ray BDP-S550 Sony XBR46" TV (probably upgrade soon) Polk RTi12 (driven surprising well from Yamaha but bought the amp for these) - 50" tall Aperion Audio Verus Grand bookshelf (Front Presence L/R), Verus Forte center No rear channels right now, nowhere to place in the room due to odd shape. Martin Logan sub 8" - need better sub. Looking at SVS, Rythmik, HSU, probably end up with "small" sealed 15(s) Waiting for M-4.0t that is claimed perfect condition....we'll see. Returned Crown XLS1500 amps x 2 due to hissing & humming, lost bass clarity at high volume. Were ran in 8ohm mono at 1040watts each claimed; barely hit -10db lights. Would draw enough power from wall socket to shut down receiver or possibly overloaded RCA output. Never tripped breaker. Apple TV requires higher min voltage and would shut off first before receiver shut off. They sucked in my system. without RCA connected, still hissed, although way less. I could hear it from 10 feet away. Music Types and examples: Old Rock: Stones, Zeppelin, Dire Straits, Elton John, Doors, Cars, Pixies, Police, Pink Floyd, War, Smashing Pumpkins, U2 New Rock/Pop: Black Eyed Peas, Flight Facilities, Adventure Club, Zeds Dead, Lounge: Paris Combo, Gotan Project, Stephane Pompougnac Club/Electro: Kaskade, Deadmau5, Tiesto About 15 years ago, I used to have a Hafler XL280, Carver preamp, some 16" woofer speakers with mid and tweeters on fronts and tops, can't remember brand. It blasted pretty loud and clear for hand me down 2 channel gear. I sold it to the business I worked for which used it in a 60000 square foot CNC manufacturing facility. It was loud enough to hear with ear protection on while 5 CNC mills and 2 CNC lathes ran. I figured it was time to get a real system again.
