JakeM 5 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Any thoughts on these speakers. I know they are vintage but from what I have read they were great speakers when new. As far as amps go what would be a safe power rating for these.
fill35U 1,847 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 FWIW, here's a story I have about KG4 speakers: KG4's trounced by a TFM-45 2
JakeM 5 Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 Ah glad I asked first as there is a set on CL for $250.00. They looked to be well taken care of but did not know much about them.
zumbini 6,153 Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 My son drives a pair of KG2.5s with an M-1.5t while a powered subwoofer provides bass and an 80Hz crossover. The 2.5's can handle an inordinate amount of power for their size but I added inline 3A slo-blow fuses for protection. He's been cranking them for about 3 years now without any fireworks, and I still have plenty of fuses left. . 1
BluesMan57 1,507 Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I have had a set since new back in 84 and have driven them with a M1.0t with no issues. And they were driven hard the first few years. The last few years they are being driven by a M1.0t MkII Opt II with no issues. They are a great set of speakers. IMO..... 1
fill35U 1,847 Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I don't want anyone to think that I feel that KG4's are inadequately designed, poorly made, inherently susceptible to damage by any particular amp, or not worth the risk even if they were! The owner in my story had been driving them with a Carver receiver, and continued to do so after they were repaired. They sounded amazing to me, before and after, at least in that very bright room. And I've never been able to figure out a completely adequate explanation for the incident. So if you find you like them, don't be afraid- go for it!
JakeM 5 Posted July 15, 2014 Author Posted July 15, 2014 Fill35U thanks, as you have been very helpful since I joined the forum. But they were nice in appearance and may be a nice set of speakers, but not this month, needed new plates for the car. I am scheduled to go and hear a system tomorrow after work that the seller wants to sell his AV 634 and his CT-17, hopefully the case of the CT-17 is nice. Oh and there was also a set of Klipsch 5.2's on the local CL that was $350.00 I believe, had to search quite a few days back so could be sold. Hopefully will be coming home tomorrow with the CT-17, will update. 1
JakeM 5 Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 Ok and now for the update. I came home with the CT-17, I could not leave it there. Everything is flawless and in great working order. But not everything is perfect, it had no remote. So the seller wanted $140.00 I offered $120.00 and away I went. So I will be watching eBay for a remote, whenever one pops up.
fill35U 1,847 Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Congratulations on your new CT-17! Kve777 is our remotes guru. You might want to drop him a line and see if he can help.
JakeM 5 Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 Fill can I send you some pics to maybe post in the thread. The pics will show just how nice this unit is.
fill35U 1,847 Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Here are the pics JakeM sent me of his new CT-17: 1
slbenz 110 Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Here is information about the KG4s from the Klipsch site:http://www.klipsch.com/kg-4/details I used to own the KG2s and they were great sounding speakers. I used a Yamaha A-500 integrated amp to power them. 1
JakeM 5 Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 I want to post a big thanks to Fill35U for posting my pics, thank-you. I have been watching a pair of Klipsch KG5.2's about 40 minutes east of me. They are on my local CL and the seller wants $250.00. Pictures look good so maybe next week on payday I can make a deal on them.Well assuming they sound good and there is no hidden damage. 1
