I found (locally) a set of Made-in-Japan Pioneer speakers from the early 1960's. Constructed in a wood case, like a piece of furniture. So, it looks like it comes from the 1960's era, and has a screen covering that would have been used during that time period, too.

It has two drivers, some type of woofer and a horn speaker (not tweeter), with independent controls for each in the back. But for the life of me I can't find any makings on this thing, other then the word "Pioneer" on them.

Was this something Pioneer did in the early 1960's? I find it hard to believe these drivers don't have some type of model number on them.

The owner claims the prior owner had them made in Japan when he was stationed there during a tour in the Navy.

All the stuff inside the cabinets looks vintage (old), wires, connections, etc . . . and they seem to be paper cones. Could this actually be a set of speakers from the 1960's Pioneer era? Or something Slick Willy through together from Radio Shack parts during the 1970's?

Any thoughts on how I may investigate the authenticity of these drivers?

With pictures I might be able to tell. We sold some Pioneer in the sixties and if I see them it might jog my memory.

Will do Comwaco! I'll get some photos and post them! Thanks!
Pioneer sold drivers for DIY cabinets, (like everybody else!)so the cabinets may not be Pioneer, but take pics of the drivers. I had 12" coax Pioneers from the early 60's as well as a couple of tube receivers. Quality stuff!
