galaxyoilcan 88 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 It's probably a stretch to think any of the AL III owners here have also heard the Apogee Centaur Minor and could give us a comparison review. But anyone who has info or opinions is welcome to offer their two cents. I'm looking at a local pick up from the same seller on both pair. He also has a pair of Ohm Walsh I would love for $379. Any opinions on them? Dibbs!
kingman 662 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 I'd go with the Carvers...plus I know the seller and he is top knotch! I'm looking to buy another set today!!!
TNRabbit 371 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 I agree with the above assessments, except I've never heard the Apogees. Those AL-IIIs need a little TLC, but the woofers & ribbons LOOK good from what I could see. Definitely play some dynamic piano music & female voice (Nora Jones & Dianna Krall hit both those requirements). Since they're skinned up on the front wings, you MIGHT be able to get them to knock $100 bux off....but that is a good price as is.
madmike46 398 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 So GOC did you get them? I see that they are sold.
Audioquest 8 Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 I haven't heard that model of Apogee, but do own the Scintilla and have owned the ALS Platinum Ribbons in general are pretty amazing, they give phenomenal and realistic detail. Some speakers are better than others blending cone drivers with ribbons though, so have a good listen. I'm willing to bet the Apogees will be better than the Walsh's though
weitrhino 1,443 Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Those AL-III's were up on eBay more than once but didn't sell. Not sure if the price has changed or if there was something really amiss with them. 1
zumbini 6,147 Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Here's the last time I saw them listed ==> Carver AL-III Speakers (ebay BIN for $599.99) 1
galaxyoilcan 88 Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 Those AL-III's were up on eBay more than once but didn't sell. Not sure if the price has changed or if there was something really amiss with them. The edges on one looks pretty gnawed up so the cosmetics on them kinda suck. As long as they still sound good I won't be able to hear how they look. Besides, I can dress up a pig (I do it every time I go out). The price I agreed to was $599 + California has their hand in my pocket for another $52.50 in state sales tax and a $10 pick up fee (WTF?). They should give me a discount for saving them the trouble of having to pack & ship. The standard shipping was going to be $220 so I suspect they supplement their profits there.
galaxyoilcan 88 Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 Here's the last time I saw them listed ==> Carver AL-III Speakers (ebay BIN for $599.99) That's them and is the price I paid. Not sure how folks let high-end gear like this get so beat up?
