True enough. It does look like crap...lol.I tried another adhesive before that and it didn't take. My plan was to change out the woofers so I wasn't really concerned how it looked at the time. I didn't expect the gasket maker to work neither...but it's been holding up to a lot of pounding. As a side note...both woofers were fresh refoams from a guy who has been freshening up cerwin vega woofers for 25 years. Couldn't handle the carver amp however .?

You can get it at " Canadian Tire "

You can try what I used. Dont laugh it worked excellent. Looks bad but is stronger than silicone i believe...red automotive gasket maker. Check out the pic in this thread of the at15 woofer. It's all around the surround. That's when my Carver pm1.5a ripped the surround from the cone.

Relocated the crossover/controls to the rear of the cabinet. All I have to do now is lengthen the crossover wires...install the drivers and wake the dead with about 500 watts.
-
She ain't pretty...but the faceplate is strong and rigid. Plan on laying crushed velvet over it like on the se380's. But that's just for later....finishing touches. Have to first lay a healthy dose of carver power into them to check for unusual noises coming from the new faceplate.

Yeah ..to be perfectly honest with you, I was not expecting this to be so labour intensive. If I knew then what I know now...I probably would either have left well enough alone ...or looked for a real potent set of 5" mids to fit in the stock location. ...I actually do have ocd...so now I have to finish the project...lol. Tonight I made some bracing to replace the ones I had to rip out to reinforce the front baffle. I also got the baffles siliconed and screwed down. ...Only thing left to do is move the crossover and controls to the back and lengthen the wires and install all the drivers. The at15 tweeters I'm using sound better than the se380 units and the se380 mids sound better than the at15's. Hopefully your right and they do end up rocking good.?

I will say that this is a lot of work to change out a few midranges..??
-
Yes I hear what you are saying. Now if the woofer is tuned to just the area behind the woofer( there Is carpeting that separates the woofer compartment from the mids and tweet)....and port size/length...then there shouldn't be a problem. ...If the woofer is being tuned to the whole area inside the cabinet and port size/ length then it's going to move the tuning of the box up ever so slightly. If you look at the pic the new baffle is sitting on top of the old one that I modified to make room for the bigger mids / tweeter location. It is 3/4" thick. ....Going by my subwoofer box building and tuning days...taking into account that the bigger size 6.5" se380 mids are taking up a bit more of internal space compared to the 5" ones that once rested there...I believe it shouldn't affect the tuning any amount that's going to have a negative impact. ...Stock cabinet tuning was 28hz. The mids and tweet are sitting 3/4" higher on the face plate. That and the difference in basket size between the two mids...might bring the tuning up to 29hz at the most...I'm hoping. Bigger question is the re-arrangment of the mids and tweet. It will either make an improvement with the different placement and or bigger mids. I wont know until I hear it running.

Disregard Thanks

New front baffle is in place. All that is needed to do now is silicone and screw it down. Change the internal brace location. Move the crossover and mid/tweet controls to the back of the outside box...pump about 500 watts into it and check for rattling noises coming from the new baffle. Already had the drivers in place. Measuring the distance from the dustcap on the woofer cone to the dustcap on the midranges to the center of the tweeter diaphragm on both speakers to make sure everything is identical.

My sick twisted mind has already been thinking about building a set with 18's. I'm waiting awhile until I see if the neighbors dont give me too much grief over my latest antics?

400-500 watts going into these Vegas is working out pretty good. Good bottom end. When I had the woofers out I was checking them out closely. No voice coil problem. Guaranteed this is the hardest these 29 year old woofers have been worked. ...playing the At15's..then the 380's ...vocals are definately sounding better with the bigger 380 midranges. Once I get them installed in the At15's cabinets...should be content.
-
Yeah thanks...you can follow the journey on the " Cerwin vega Frankenstein" thread. Should be up and running by the weekend.

At least around these parts..the 380 se and dx9 are rare. I would go with a set of At-15's or D9's. Parts are readily available and reasonably priced. Good thing the power is on tap and clean...lol
-
Two different type of tweeters. I went with the At-15's. Took out all the drivers and wiring . Built a custom set of front baffles out of 3/4" mdf all ready to be cut out and transplanted into the front of At-15 enclosures. I would have preferred the same midrange/ tweeter positioning as stock...but the se380's are massive compared to the At15's....so I had to re- design it.
-
So to get the best possible sound I have decided to modify my At-15's. Top pic is how it sits now. Se-380 woofer in at-15 cabinets for stronger bass response. Note the difference between mid size between the at-15's and se380's. And the difference between the 2 woofers.

Yup..shes a beast of an amp. Running into 4 ohms every Friday night cranked without breaking a sweat. No grounding problems. Supplies loud clean power. Would buy another one in a heart beat. Most reliable power amp I have ever owned.?
-
The at-15's mids look " flimsy " and cheap compared to the mids out of the se-380's. The 380's are huge and use better cones. Already have all the drivers out and built some custom baffles out of 3/4 mdf.?

Going to be cutting in to the cerwin Vegas this week. Scrapping the horn tweeters for now. It's going to be my Vega hybred. Using At-15 cabinets, at-15 crossovers, se-380 woofers, se-380 mids and At-15 tweeters. ...Should work out well. All drivers have identical impedance ratings between the 2 sets of speakers. Right now the se-380 woofers are pounding harder in the At-15 cabinets. The Se-380 mids are 6.5 " compared to the flimsy 5" ones in the At-15's. The bigger ones are sonically superior and built a lot better. The at-15's tweets sound better than the 380's. It will be the best of both models merged into 1. Time to design.

Yes sir. That will be next weekends little project. I have built car subwoofer enclosures and have actually built a nice set of " audiophile " speakers in the past out of 3/4 " MDF using silver flute woofers, vifa tweeters and custom built solen crossovers. These sounded extraordinary on my Nad amp at the time. ...But this pm1.5a / cerwin Vegas is bringing out the bad in me. I have an itch to build something for extremely loud playback without subwoofers. Either 2 15" or 1-18" with horns. But first I'm going to mess around with these cerwin Vegas a bit. Keep the woofers but swap out the tweeters and midrange. Bass is great. I want to see if I can make the vocals scream even louder.
-
Fired up the pm1.5a and Cerwin Vegas again last night for another 5 hour run. Made a short video so I can download it here on the forum to show the raw power of this beast of an amp. Of course I have to figure out the video part. ...Woofer excursion reminded me of my car subwoofer days. How these things are surviving is beyond me...lol . 500 watts of deadmause causing my place to act like one big subwoofer is an absolute audio thrill. Thinking to yourself this is so loud and extreme..it almost should not be allowed. After a few hours of insane bass switch it over to the likes of Crosby stills and Nash when you know the neighbors are probably getting pissed and all the suds and smoke have you craving all the loud vocals of the 60's and 70's to truly get mellow. Doesn't get much better than that.?
-
I have a set of Cerwin vega pa speakers. They have a 15" woofer and a 4x4 compression cv-h25 horn tweeter....8 ohms. Now these will not play as deep as my Cv home speakers as I believe they are tuned to about 45 hz. ...But as far as loud vocals go..they are louder than my Cv home speakers. The horn tweeters will rip your head off running off the pm1.5a. Just curious if these horn tweeters would improve the sound in my at-15's that currently have the stock dome tweeters installed.

Yeah I assume it's on a 15 amp circuit

Just a quick question on the light dimming to the bass. I plan on getting around to installing a dedicated line. But for now is this ( dimming), dangerous at all. Btw the dimming is happening with led lights all throughout the house. The wiring in my place is older. What are the chances of tripping a breaker? I read somewhere that the pm1.5a can draw 12 Amps. I have the Carver amp, nad pre-amp, cd player and a few lights hooked up to a monster cable hts 1000. I am running 4 ohm stereo. I assume after running hard for about 5 hrs last weekend...if something was about to trip it would have then?
