  1. Hi, Bob. Welcome and glad you introduced yourself! I would 2nd the 20W amp.
  2. Welcome Sanford. I'd love to see some pics of your gear if you get the chance to post them.
  3. Rather than retyping my post in the Klipsch forum, I'll put a link here. http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/143521.aspx Also, this really isn't a "mod" more of a refurbishment of the veneer. I hope its OK I'm posting it in this area, I wasn't sure where else it fit. I've done a lot of cleaning up and I like to refinish wood. I've got pretty good at restoring the oiled wood finishes. This is the first time I've worked with the veneer. So far so good. By the way, these speakers are completely awesome. After reading other's opinions / reviews of them I wasn't expecting much bass. OK - that was wrong. They have plenty and I didn't even have them correctly in corners. These weren't supposed to be keepers, they were a project..... we'll see what happens.
  4. Welcome, Bill. I used to live in Lakeland. There's a great group here!

    Unusual Vinyl Finds

I love the cover on this one. Every once in a while Goodwill comes through for me..... It even has a nice texture like a painting.
  6. @ under a $1 each you really can't go wrong with vinyl if it is not scratched. Yesterday I stopped by after work to find somebody else's trash to be my new treasure. 50 albums, 7 Elton John, 2 CSN, a CSN&Y, 2 James Taylor, Jethro Tull, 2 Bob Dillan, Jimi Hendrix, Lovin Spoonful, Booker & Heat, Psychedelic Lollipop Blues magoos, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton, etc. Almost all in VG+ to mint condition, all still have original sleeves and any posters & booklets. Ooh, Sound of Music (favorite for my daughter and I) and Meatloaf Bat Outa Hell - sweet!
  7. I noticed the prices are quite high and not many are around. I don't have any, and am not sure I will given the steep prices. It would be nice if there was a site that ranked the quality of "standard" CDs. Its really disappointing to get a new CD that has such low quality recording. I think the two best sounding CDs I have are The Eagles - Greatest Hits, and Eric Clapton's Unplugged. I also have a few half speed LPs that sound great. Unfortunately, I have a lot of CDs that aren't really that great. Does anybody have any suggestions on some of the better sounding CDs out there? Generally I listen to classic rock & pop from the 70s - 90s, along with some of the more current music.
  8. Sorry for the dirty room, I'm oiling my speakers, my daughter is doing homework, and we are listening to her pick of music. You can see the sub in the top left of the mantle. Yes, the WAF is not high on this arrangement, but I'm here to confirm, it works VERY well. Originally the fu-fu on the mantle was on the two sides, if I can get it back over there it would hide the sub quite nicely.
  9. Can somebody explain to me? They aren't SACD or DVD-Audio, but aren't they supposed to be better recordings than standard issued CDs? How does this work? Does anybody have experience with these? Are they good?
  10. I tried this out now that my big-boy subwoofer is back. The subwoofer up on the mantle, which is about midway between the floor and ceiling (about 9' up) works great. I have the crossover set at 80dB by my Denon AVR unit and with the sub up on the mantle I have to turn it down to about 1 (10%) or it over powers everything. For movies, (2) is good. On the floor, I have to turn the dial midway between 2-3 for the same output. I wish I had some of that cool measuring software that I've seen others use in their rooms, but I don't. So without any way to measure the difference, my results are a little subjective. Having said that it is easy to tell the difference when you unplug the unit, move it from the floor up 9', and plug it back in and having to move the dial so it doesn't obnoxiously shake the wall! My other speakers used during this demo are the Klipsch KP201s (Heresy II) set to LARGE on the Denon.
  11. I have a Sunfire Symphonic Reference I use and like quite a bit. It has a remote, is easy to use, the quality is high... I really don't have anything bad to say about it. They can be found fairly regularly around $500, or a little less if your patient. In the long run, this will be more reliable and less costly than going with an older tube amp. Just another idea for you. It would be nice if you could get an antracite preamp to match your amp, but I don't know if any of the Carver Anthracite Preamps have remotes.
  12. I'm going to test this out, I'll let you know what I find. My Sunfire Signature is currently on loan, when I get it in a few weeks, I'll put it up on the top of a VERY large mantle that is 7' up (half way) in a 2 story room. I know it is taboo to put speakers up there (I tried - it was bad), but I can see how with a sub it wouldn't matter. This would also solve a decorating issue / WAF for the floor below. I could hide it up there and put a plant, or some other girly fu-fu in front of it.
