  1. Welcome to the site! We are all a bunch of audio gear heads who love music and gear. Congrats on your repair of the turntable!  Now that you are here, you need to be aware of 2 things:

    1. OCCD - worse than Corona virus, but you don't die from it. You go broke or in debt.

    2. We are enablers. We encourage people to buy the gear they want or think they want.

    But mostly, enjoy the site......grin

  2. Welcome to the site! I would hook up the equipment in different combinations and listen to a few tracks and see what sounds best to you. If you are going to keep all your equipment (for any future systems......read OCCD here......grin) I would refurbish it so you can really enjoy it. I agree with Sk1bum, the C-1 and 4000 series preamps sound great when refurbished and the M500t amplifier as well. I own those same pieces and enjoy them. Experiment and see what you think.......grin

    • Thank You 4
  3. Welcome Elmer! That is definitely a nice starter setup you have! It took me a while to collect those exact pieces. After you enjoy them for a while, you might want to get them refurbished so they will last a while and sound great! Enjoy the site and if you have any questions, just ask. There are great people here who will answer them.......grin

    Hi,

Im new to this site. From norcal area. Loved carver gear since they came out in early 90’s.

Im a tube head and recently (6 months ago) got a carver sd/a 490t as a Cdp on my system. Looking forward to recapping this unit. The unit already sounds awesome as it is.. but ...the love to see what lies ahead if i do a recap is a worthy journey...

Welcome CT12! The 490t is a nice player. I have one that I am going to recap. Reason is, caps are 30 years old, not because it sounds bad. All gear that old needs it. And, my experience has been it sounds better after a recap. YMMV. Enjoy the site and if you have questions, ask!

Last night I endeavored to set up my bedroom system to experience Sonic Holography.  I have tried before, but my attempts have been unsuccessful.  As wifey watched a movie in the theatre room I started moving around speakers and furniture in the bedroom in an attempt to experience the elusory Carver Sonic Holography.  The speakers are large electrostatic speakers that are bi-wired and weigh 75lbs a piece.  Luckily they slide fairly easily on the carpet.  I broke out the tape measure, the C1 manual and the red wine.  I danced the speakers around the room with the recommended Angus and Julia Stone CD playing.  At times I felt like I could notice the sound field spreading out and getting wider than the physical speakers, but I never achieved that "aha" moment where a new depth and sonic bliss was realized.  I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or if I have unrealistic expectations since I have a multi channel setup in my theatre room that is immersive with 5 speakers surrounding my listening position. I'm going to keep trying, but up until now I have not experienced what I believe others have experienced with SH.  My next plan is to download the SH tracks and attempt to make SH happen for me.

I think you were doing it right with the manual and the red wine.......grin. I have never tried to set it up. My room is not setup for it and speaker placement WILL not pass the WAF........grin
