oldtexasdog 2,492 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 I picked up 3 pairs the other day-one for the TT system one for the shop-one for the car LOL(-; seriously a little out of my budget range these days. I can only dream about listening to music through one of these. 1
kcetp 47 Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I recently picked up a used pair of HiFiMan HE-400 for a great price because I wanted to see what all the buzz was about planar phones. I can't afford any of the Audeze models. The HiFiMan is Chinese, but it's a great set of cans built like a tank and weighs almost as much. They're open back so there's lot's of bleed in and out but I only use them at home so that's not a concern for me. They also have a lot of "air" so the music isn't so much in my head as I'm in the music. Planar technology means that they're fast, clean and dynamic with great tight realistic bass (fans of bass boosted cans such as the awful BEATS need not apply). They will reveal everything about the source so I'd rule out low bit compressed mp3s, I listen to FLACs, some 24bit. I've only had them for a few weeks but so far I love them. They are a bit heavy but they fit nice and snug on my head so it's not really too bad. I also got some velour ear pads which are more comfortable and help with the bass. Now I'm looking for a nice headphone amp to drive them. So, what I'm trying to say if you're interested in planar cans, try to pick up a pair of HE-400 on the cheap, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Lot's of good reviews on the web. kcetp 1
compwaco 1,129 Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Has anyone had a chance to compare the sound of these new planers to the Stax electrostats from the '80s?
