Ratamahatta 437 Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Like I need anymore speakers well I did get rid of two sets and two subwoofers, lol. I was bored and went to a local pawn shop and they had these for 14 bucks Really clean condition, well after I got the grime off them. I thought I would get them to flip but after I hooked them up they sound really good, I mean shockingly good, I was really surprised. Now I dont really want to get rid of them, hell I'm only out 14 bucks. OK let me get to the good stuff, I got on CL just for the hell of it and found these right off the bat. I did not know which ones they were and neither did the seller but figured it was worth a look, and driving 40 miles round trip in a snowstorm. I got them and the stands for 20 bucks. Altec Lansing 301 Pics I had the smaller version of these with a 8" woofer but had a carbon fiber mid range as well. They sounded excellent but reluctantly got rid of them. I was surprised to see these were the 10" versions with the dome mid range. Of course the foam surrounds are bad and one tweeter dome was pushed in, Luckily they can be dismantled and pushed it back out. I did get a chance to listen to them at low volumes and was blown away. These are after the sparkomatic buy out that ruined the company but these still got good reviews. http://www.stereophile.com/content/altec-lansing-301-loudspeaker. Anyway these have the surrounds under the cone and I have never done one of those, well I have but just glued it to the top, These cones are really to good looking to do that, I found some surrounds on e-bay and will attempt it. wish me luck. Does anyone else have any experience with either of these? Thanks
Ratamahatta 437 Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 Thanks. I forgot I also got a Klipsch KV-3 http://www.klipsch.com/kv-3/details also to better match the Forte II's, they're so sensitive I needed a better match.
Ratamahatta 437 Posted November 22, 2014 Author Posted November 22, 2014 Well its official, These Altec Lansing 301's are the best 42 dollar speakers I have ever owned, lol. Actually they are some of the best I have ever owned. I am going to tell you right now IMO they sound better than the Infinity Kappa 6.1's I just sold. Just more detailed and have made me jump a few times, nice wide, deep sound stage, everything is well placed, female vocals sound right and accurate. I got the surrounds on yesterday and they fit right on, the rear mount surrounds are actually way easier. Funny two pieces of foam cost more than the speakers. I put some old English on the veneer and they shined right up. On a weird note the woofers magnets are different, one has a bumped back magnet and the other one is flat. The serial numbers are kind of far apart so I think they just probably went through a different supplier. also the leads were zip tied to the basket so I believe they are both original and the same specs except one is 7.2 ohms and the other is 7.4, go figure. Anyway a great find at any rate. 2

I have even tried to plan short day trips with the wife but she sees right through me knowing I just want to check out some amp or set of speakers in the middle of nowhere.. Nice to see others find treasure 1
