Ratamahatta 437 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 I have a friend who had these and wanted a set of my Sony speakers. these needed some work and one subwoofer I imagine still needs some work. Two blown tweeters that I found replacements (4 actually) and installed them. Then we decided to trade, I also included a amplifier as these are worth a bit more. The woofers have been replaced with those Mavin Audio, they came with the original and somebody tried to put rubber surrounds on them. I took them off and ordered new foam but imagine these ones will sound better, but will see. Cabinets and grills on speakers are in excellent condition the woofers are also in great condition with the exception of a few wire terminals broken, but use RCA's so don't care and one led is burned out. Also had to de-ox the volume pots and they work fine now. The bad news was the front baffle is only 3/4" thick with a 1/4" recess and it just particle board with T nuts on back. Somehow some moron broke the wood on three of the T-nut locations completely off. So I had to go in and cut two half circles and glue them behind the baffle and then fill the damaged areas with wood putty. I did one but still have to do the other one, I have not even looked but imagine its bad as well. Also the rear plate had no gasket so I put some on. Also these had just an insane amount of poly fill in them and it just seems like way to much, don't know if it was stock or not but I only put back about half. I also liquid nailed the inside of the cabinet corners. So far I am more than impressed that these nearly 30 year old speakers sound so damn good. When I re-foam the original I will a-b them, I also have to replace that LED. Enough rambling, PICS a before and after on the sub repair.
Ar9Jim 6,520 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Nice work. Many years ago a coworker had an M&K sub/sat system in his house. We both worked night shift and many times I stopped by his house on the way home for a beer or two.The M&K speakers sounded great and were impressive.Years latter he moved to Tempe,AZ and worked for Rockford(Fosgate).Nice repair and well worth the effort IMHO. 1
Ratamahatta 437 Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 Thanks, I guess M&K are not that well known or loved. Anyway these are proof positive that you don't need big huge speakers for rich full detailed sound. These are some of the best I have ever heard. I did try them with the Sunfire sub and they sounded fine as well.
Daddyjt 9,858 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 That's an awesome find! I got tuly hooked on HT in the early 90's, when I heard a setup using the S-5000 speakers - totally blew me away. Interesting story about the Volkswoofer - It was created by M&K when Walter Becker wanted something better for studio monitoring, while making Pretzel Logic album. He went to M&K, and the Volkswoofer was the result. 2
4krow 7,439 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Back in time, a buddy of mine got some of these. His old Sony speakers were absolute crap, and I talked him into buying these. He became quite dedicated to HT and these served him well. I have had a high opinion ever since. 1
Ratamahatta 437 Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 Thanks, I have not tried these for HT, only music, and so far am simply stunned. Detailed, image like a mofo and simply disappear. The only minor gripe I have is that they are inefficient but that's just nit-picking. The only thing I wonder what to do if or when the time comes is what to do when the amp inside these die? Have it re-built? order a Dayton from PE? maybe just put a more powerful sub and amp? just plug the plate and run them with an external? I guess I will figure that out when the time comes. So far really impressed with the modest (compared to today's standards) 200 watt rms amp inside. I barely have these turned up 1/4 of the way and they're just about 30 years old! Sony makes some crap speakers but the ones I traded were not. I only did it because these were rare and I have three other sets of Sony speakers that I like more. another pic.
zumbini 6,153 Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Nice work on the M&K's. Glad you are enjoying them. Hadn't thought about it before but I own several sub/sat speaker systems and all of them image well. I run Design Acoustics DA-30's in my home office and shop (2 or 4 DA-10 sats with a DA-20LF sub). And tecnically speaking the Legacy Audio speakers in my main system are sub/sats on steroids..... 1
