jerry66 7 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 a raspy sound once in a while , if i push in the cone it has a rubbing sound . I am sure it is finished . Any idea on a good replacement ? I will most likely replace all 4 , sure that a new speaker with 20 year old speakers will not sound right . Just not sure on what would be a good replacement . Willing to spend $50.-$70.00 per speaker , less if possible . I found replacement passive rad for the back , so just need the 8" to complete
BluesMan57 1,411 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 jerry keep checking E-Bay several times a week I see people parting out KG-4 speakers.Within the last week there were at least 2 sets there. Or try this: http://cgi.ebay.com/One-pair-of-Klipsch-K-8-K-8-speakers-taken-from-KG4S_W0QQitemZ270521290733QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSpeakers_Subwoofers?hash=item3efc534fed
RichP714 3,163 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Also try Klipsch, they may sell replacements
jerry66 7 Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 Also try Klipsch' date=' they may sell replacements[/quote'] Thanks I saw those , no shipping to Canada . I was hoping one of you would know of a good new speaker that would be a good match . I would like to replace all 4 woofers , that would give the best sound , I would think . And Rich klipsh no longer have this model replacements
BluesMan57 1,411 Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 jerry try this: http://cgi.ebay.com/KLIPSCH-K-9-8-Woofer-KG2-Speaker_W0QQitemZ250572397128QQcategoryZ0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m506QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DNGRI%26its%3DI%252BC%252BS%26itu%3DUA%26otn%3D10%26ps%3D63
jerry66 7 Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 thanks i am bidding on them , so far i have yet to win anything on e bay .Anyone here know about how to match an 8"woofer to those boxes ? . if I can't win that k-9 I would like to replace all 4 woofers . What should I look for in the speaker , or would it be a mistake ? I found 2 complete working speakers , if they will part them out i will buy all 8 speakers , no box .
tinpan 5 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 If it were me I would hold out for the correct Klipsch woofer. My first speakers were the Klipsch KG 4s and I still have them. I think it's worth fixing them correctly. Heck next time you need shipping to Canada ship em to me and I'll send them to ya.
jerry66 7 Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 thanks tinpan , might take you up on that .
madmike46 398 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I would definatly hold out for the correct woofer for your speakers, less chance of changing the sound of your speakers with the original speakers then you don't have to replce all the other woofers.
jerry66 7 Posted March 28, 2010 Author Posted March 28, 2010 Thanks Bluesman 57 , I bought those speakers , he sent 2 and they are a perfect match , put one in each box and the sound is great ! Just found a passive rad for the ripped cone passive rad on one speaker , that will complete the project . now that I am back and the speakers fixed the 500-tmk II sounds great !
Guest LeoF Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 I notice that the woofers for the KG2 and KG4 have slightly different numbers, K-9 vs. K-8. It may be nothing more than cosmetic, or it could be impedance. I believe the KG2 had a 4 ohm impedance, but a single woofer (assumed to be 4 ohm). The KG4 also had a 4 ohm impedance, but dual woofers, so it probably used 8ohm woofers wired in parallel to give a 4 ohm load. Wiring an 8 ohm woofer to a 4 ohm will give you 2.667 ohms. Worse yet, if you use the two 4 ohm woofers in the same cabinet, they will give you 2 ohms in parallel! You may want to double check their impedance compared to your old woofers. This may present an abnormally low impedance to your amp. Of course, Carvers should handle it. Otherwise, the specs are probably fairly similar to the old woofers. I would at least put one new woofer in each box along with one old woofer so the impedance isn't at 2 ohms. It sounds like voice coil rubbing, but it's hard to say if it's really a bad coil, or if the surrounds are corroding and allowing the cone to get out of alignment. If the surrounds are rotting pretty bad, you could try putting new surrounds on them. Go to PartsExpress and check out the speaker repair center or surround repair. It's not difficult, but is time consuming. Make sure of your measurements, and be sure to get everything as clean as possible when you remove the old surround. It doesn't have to be perfect, but you don't want to glue to bits of deteriorating surround. If there is cardboard trim, try to get a utility knife under it to cut it off. It doesn't matter if the cardboard trim is a bit rough after cutting it away because the rough side will be glued back down in the end. To align the voice coil, cut the dust cap off very carefully (cut just in from the crease at the cone, knife somewhat parallel to the sloped surface of the cone). Then insert index cards into the space between the voice coil and the pole piece. Space them evenly. I usually just cut one so that it will make a complete circle. I insert it starting at one corner then walk it around and down into the voice coil gap. I pull up on the cone while pushing down on the card. If it's still loose, slide another card around it. If it's pretty tight to where you can't use another card all the way around, cut small strips and work them down into the gap on opposite sides of the voice coil. When gluing the surround, glue it to the frame first while making sure it looks centered over the cone (even if it doesn't look centered on the frame, though it should be fairly close). After the glue dries, then glue the surround to the cone. Pull or push on the cone to get the spider flat, not sunk down or bowed up. You have to keep going back and occasionally "pinching" the surround to the cone as the glue dries as it tends to want to lift up. Read their instructions for the rest. Again, all this assumes that the coil and cone are out of alignment. If the coil is delaminating or burning out, well, enjoy the replacement woofers. As for the passive radiator, you say you replaced it? Hopefully it's from another KG4. Passives have to be tuned to the box resonant frequency, so you can't just throw in any old passive that fits the hole unless you add or subtract weight to tune it to the box resonant frequency. I'm not trying to worry you, just making you aware. Hope this helps. LeoF
jerry66 7 Posted March 28, 2010 Author Posted March 28, 2010 i put one new woofer/speaker , the passive rad is the exact model that came out kd-12 12" . So far the speakers sound great , they are rated 6 ohms , at least that is what is printed on the paper on the back . I wish klipsh would give a bit more info on speaker specs ! As for replacing the foam surrounds , they are rubber and still in perfect shape , it really is a bad coil as far as I can tell .
