Ran across this and though it was an interesting topic and idea.

How similar is the construction of an AL3 ribbon compared to the earlier Amazings?

They look similar on the outside but I have never seen the insides.

I have rebuilt all versions. They are similar but like most of what Bob did the design and materials were tweaked along the way.

The method used in that video is interesting. I think it would tighten the Kapton only a marginal amount. If it works it works.

I dont see that working that well. All the ribbons we repair are mostly really loose on the ends where you can't pull the ribbon tight with that screw method. To me it seams like it would have very tight spots in the screw areas and still stay loose in the areas in between the screws and of course on the ends. I'm not sure I would want to drill into my ribbons like that. When we tighten loose ribbons we use our jig to evenly tighten the kapton all the way across. And yes all the ribbons are mostly the same on the inside but with different materials (plastic on earlier and steel later) used to retain the tension on the ribbon, internal dampening pads on later models, and the wire to ribbon contact methods are different on earlier to later models.
