jmcipale 162 Posted December 23, 2025 Posted December 23, 2025 (edited) Ok, so the project I am working on: An indirect replacement for the nonsense known as discogs: Data tracking without all the nonsense. So I thought I would involve chatgpt to cut out some of the chafe. Big mistake. HUGE! On thing about vibe coding/chatgpt is, you the user HAVE TO KNOW what you are doing! It is one thing to be a complete noob about coding.. ANY CODING! but then the old garbage in/garbage out makes itself apparent. AI is, if one gets down to it, rather stupid and really DOESNT save a lot of time. But, it IS helpful for recalling commands that one has forgotten over time. Save your time and invest in other things besides AI stocks. Edited December 23, 2025 by jmcipale 1

I agree; I've been experimenting with CoPilot (Microsoft) and Gemini (Google) and so far it's been underwhelming so no investments in any AI...

On the "vibe coding".... you are exactly right. People think AI is a free ride. Nope. At best it can save you some time and it can act like an expedited "help" function, as you say. But, you cannot rely on AI without being able to critically challenge it. I do a lot of coding (I use Claude, mostly, not ChatGPT). It can save you some time in writing bulk code, up front. But, from there, it's best to tweak it and debug the code yourself. The main thing I've found is that AI does not think logically when making code edits. If you tell it to change just one feature of the code, you cannot trust that it will change ONLY that feature...it will hallucinate and create a change somewhere else for an unknown reason. It's very maddening when trying to debug. It's like trying to hit a moving target.
jmcipale 162 Posted May 6 Author Posted May 6 @Kurt - Discogs is simply bloated. Kevin Lewandoski (who i used to work with at Intel) had a great idea, initially, but then he made the tool a 'once size fits all' tool. Can find a recording, ok, create the entry yourself - but DON'T insert Bonnie Rait under 'Folk' music! Don't create multiple releases because YOUR copy doesnt match that of another entry that utilizes THE EXACT SAME INFO other than the genre or order of performers. There is a lot of chaff that goes with discogs: Too many genres for one recording. Infighting among submitters/moderators with no guidance on how to avoid hiccups. Sellers who are shady, buyers who want the world for nothing (yes, I know, it is no different than eBay). All-in-all what started out as method to curate ones collection has become a black hole of useless information. Even the Forums have become polluted with politics, in-fighting, and other facets that you find on facebook. I keep discogs around for one reason: Insurance purposes. If something were to happen to my collection (fire, storm damage, burglary), then I have an idea as to replacement value. But I WILL NOT buy or sell from the site.
Kurt 3,303 Posted May 7 Posted May 7 I can see how Discogs would be a problem for serious collectors. I only use it just as a database for my collection and I have used it to buy records that I want from other users. So, it's okay for my use. It also gives me a rough estimate of the value of my collection...but, since I never really intend to sell, that's not all that big of deal for me (other than knowing what I paid for a record is in the ballpark of the market price). But, yeah, there are way too many versions of the same record/pressing.... nobody is cleaning that stuff up. I don't use the forums or get involved with debate over the records.... really didn't even know that was going on in the site, lol. But, knowing the audiophile world, I guess that's par for the course. Hard to find an audio forum where people are having 100% constructive, polite, conversations. That's one of the things I like about this site (though there have been some rough patches here, too).... most everyone gets along with each other and is very helpful on the Carversite. 1
