All the posts here have basically answered all my questions but it is still nagging me to find that article which may never happen.

There are a few hard-to-use research tools on the internet..., one is to go to the WayBack machine, which has every past internet page ever..., I have not looked there...

Another is to query one or more of the other groups and forums that focus on Carver gear - or stereo / audiophile stuff in general..., a la Audio Karma, Phoenix, et. al.

I have another packrat friend..., I may reach out to if he's still around.

I had the same experience with a John Belushi weekend update skit where he rambles on about Christmas, and all he wanted for Christmas was a pony, so on Christmas morning he opened up a package there was a sweater with a pony on it. He looked at them, they looked him, yelling started and a fight began, and then, somebody pulled out a shotgun!

I memorized it but never once found reference to it in searches. Why?

  Maybe this?:

I'll be damned. That is the closest that I have ever got to this skit. It is interesting that the wording was changed. No doubt that there were different rehearsals of it, but this one I saw live (on TV that is). Thanks! I thought it was completely lost forever, and it is one of my favorites. I have a hundred others that I remember to be great as well.

Check out page 52. Its about a simple Hafler hookup.

NOTE!!! IT DOES CAUTION ABOUT USING THE FURNISHED HOOKUP WITH A CARVER AMP. IT MAY SENSE THE CONNECTIONS AS A SHORT AND SHUTDOWN.

The SCA-80Q  that I mentioned has the controls built in to accomplish the balancing when you are using four speakers.

@BobTFM35 just read pg 52 and has me wondering. I’m using a Yamaha M50 amp until I can get my M4 amp recapped. I have the kit to do it but just haven’t had time to do it.

my M50 has circuit protection - speaker protection among other things like stopping a nuke burn up I would hope lol. So I’m wondering if adding the required speakers would trip the protection circuit.

I don’t really need to build this setup but damn the urge to experiment like it is 1978 again is creeping up in me. Guess the only way to know is to build it.
