An old guy...but Noobe here. Doing my bit to keep vintage audio gear alive and real. Not a fan of Class-D...how can chopping a power supply sound like a pair of EL34s or KT66s

Currently trying to repair an Amber 3501 test set...circa 1988. Checking out whether it might be possible to improve the input section with modern semiconductors...particularly since the 2SK146 Dual JFETs are unobtainium....Thinking some members might give me some pointers.

If my memory serves, you can look at PartsExpress for a comparable part. I don't know/cant recall if that is a National Semiconductor, Motorola or Hitachi part. Worst case, ask chatgpt or geminiAI for a compstible replacement part.

Many thanks guys....and Half Life hit the jackpot..the datasheet actually states it's a drop-in replacement for the 2SK146...with a better noise figure....the Amber may live again...!!...I was nearly giving up...actually started looking for a used QA403...

I do need to come clean and admit I don't own any Carver gear...although have repaired some in my time. ...does that count...?

Being exposed to Carver gear counts in my eyes. All it takes is that first step. Could it be a nice Carver SD/A-390t 5‑Disc Carousel CD Player, or one of the many amps that Bob has designed. My first step was a TFM 35, and after that ....

Dip your toe once and the rest will be history.

Good luck on your restoration of the Amber, its kind of a cool looking piece of equipment.

Damn Bob!  That is a sweet setup!  Will you adopt me?  I know how to use a lawn mower! 😁

@Half Life Thanks. And the answer is Yes! Forget about the grass too many CCR records to spin.

I use to live on the other side of the James River for over a year, long ago, Langley. Spent many a weekend at Virginia Beach, Norfolk for a variety of reasons.
