SteveFord 1,125 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Today I managed to do the following: Replaced the old beat white speaker socks on the MMGs with new black ones and figured out why the tweeter section wasn't working on one. Good old FIDO pissed on one and the vile mutt's urine actually ate through two of the spade connectors! Got that fixed and they sound just like new. Those are really great little speakers. Then I replaced the old crappy white socks on the 1.6s with new black ones and restained the wood trim. She looks-a much more betterer. As it that wasn't enough torture for one day I made a set of stands for the 3.6s so those giant panels aren't at the mercy of those dipshit feet that Magnepan feels are sufficient. The increase in bass and the focus of the soundstage is dramatic. I'm beat!
zumbini 6,150 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Well done Steve. Time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
kve777 6,889 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Nice work! I'm sorting out failed Soundstream gear. Neither preamp will power up. GRRRR!

zumbini 6,150 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I was busy too Steve. The boys had a gig this morning and their PA monitors were a bit iffy. Once we got the gear back in the basement I decided to do some troubleshooting. The pots on their old DeArmond powered 6-channel mixer were in dire need of cleaning. Took 2 cans of Radio Shack cleaner and a can of DeOxit but it's quiet as a church mouse now. One of their monitors and a vocal mike have been cutting out so I inspected and tested all the cables. Trashed a few cheapos, re-soldered lots of connections and added strain-relief to all the ones I kept. Still had an intermtitent problem with one of their 20 year old homemade monitors so I opened them up. The 15" "Boss" subwoofers appeared to have come out of the trunk of a low-rider but were still solid. However, the internal wiring was 20 ga zip cord and the connections were frayed so I replaced it with 14 ga. The 1" bullet tweeters were direct-wired (?) so I installed some spare XO's from a pair of trashed Infinitys. I felt a bit like Dr. Frankenstein (it's alive!) but the monitors sound 100% better and are much louder now.
SteveFord 1,125 Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 Once you go black... MMGs which I'm not sure where to put yet 1.6s Braced 3.6s Fugly but functional
OBI56 23 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 ¨The MMGs look SOOOOO much better in black Steve but the 3.6s do indeed look like something my son would have done without me looking over his shoulder.
SteveFord 1,125 Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 It'll work for a bit. I'll go with Mye stands or something similar later on but I'm not sure if they go up as high as they should.
SteveFord 1,125 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 I think I've got it - two large triangles that I can bolt each panel to. The triangles would then be tied together top and bottom. I had the right idea but just wasn't sure on the execution. Maybe have them made out of square section tubing which I can then fill up with steel shot. I don't think that those Mye stands go up high enough as these panels are 6' tall.
