YardCrap 60 Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 Speakers many have are vintage type box speakers. There are formulas for determining the box volume (right or wrong?) The newer types like the new Bob Carver entry are speakers wrapped in alinumin with little volume. I have both types. Who is wrong or right? not a problem for me, but spell check here is not friendly if I am doing it right.

Both.....But you forgot open baffle speakers, they require only a baffle, and sometimes not even that. Then stats and planers.... Working with arrays like Bobs new ones are a bit different again. Then theres ported or sealed, that can make a difference as well in cab size. Kinda like jelly beans...remember when there was only 5 flavours...now theres hundreds Which one you like best might depend on how many youve tasted.....same for speakers.
Belvedere2 232 Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 Yep couldn't agree more. I have Maggies and Bose 901s. Wouldn't get rid of either one and like both alot. Hoping to get a pair of AR-9s someday but won't replace the ones I already have. Somedays I just feel listening to one or the other. 1
SteveFord 1,125 Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 I always wanted a low wattage SET system with some horns for a change of pace. Hmmm...

I like several different brands and models in my vintage stable. I have Infinity Quantum models, a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 that I listen to often and my latest flavor treat is a pair of Carver AL-III that I'm still getting used to. They are all so different but I like them all. I'm putting together a tube system for the even more vintage boxes I 'm holding onto with the paper cones which are mostly very efficient and a few have the old alnico drivers. (ancient history alert).

This is a perfect example of WHY you need to LISTEN to speakers and pick something you LIKE. I had a pair of Bose 901's - didn't do anything for me. Picked up a nice pair of KEF 103/2's - ok but not quite what I was looking for. Found a pair of Polk RTA 12's - dynamite. Converted them to 12B's, and recapped them, even nicer. \ Belvedere2 likes his Bose, I moved mine down the road as soon as I could. It's really not a matter of "best" but "different". Different designs have different characteristics and produce a different pallet of sound. Your room size, musical taste, front end gear, and own personal taste all influence what speakers you like.
