snow 240 Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Anyone here ever own a pair or currently own a pair of these? The reason I am asking is I bought a pair last night and they sound good to a point with crystal clear highs and mids with so so bass, the imaging is near perfect the sound stage is not as wide as my JBL's are but livable and I could get used to it easily enough but I may need to find either a tube amp or a very warm SS amp to be able to listen every day any ideas or thoughts experiences are appreciated. snow 240 Posted April 29, 2013 Author Posted April 29, 2013 Well no thoughts so far so I suppose I will have to add my own Dom you need a pair of these since you like Jazz, vocals are superb guitar plucks are vivid and accurate even gourds can be heard like you were there next to them . I would have to say that imaging depth and placement of instruments is the best I have ever heard, clarity and detail will shock you, they don't play real low so if you like real loud boomy bass these are not for you, the sound stage is wide not as wide as some speakers I have heard but not lacking either. Very few audio items live up to the hype IMHO and I am usually dissapointed and left shaking my head thinking that the items were at best over rated and at worst an outright crock of crap written by idiots with severe hearing loss coupled with very bad judgement and or taste. If anyone gets the opportunity to purchase a pair do so I doubt you will be dissapointed. REGARDS SNOW
zumbini 6,147 Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Bass response and sound stage may be affected by the age of the crossover caps. A refresh may be all those speakers need to really shine!
galaxyoilcan 88 Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Good score Snow! I have been interested in those speakers and IMHO they are the only decent sounding Japanese speakers I have ever heard. Here are few links I found for refurb, mod or upgrade.: http://www.audioflat.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=159 http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Yamaha-NS1000.htm http://www.audiosmile.com/forum/showthread.php?p=274028 http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/126270-yamaha-ns1000-crossover-tweaks-20.html
Daddyjt 9,614 Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 After a couple hours or research last night, I came to three (3) conclusions: 1. I can't believe I've never heard, or heard OF these. 2. I would very much like to listen to a set. 3. I have added them to my "targets of opportunity" list! Thanks for the interesting topic!

They often come up on ebay and CL and a good deal can be found occasionally. Very solid and built like a BSH. Snag a pair, upgrade the crossovers and add tight little sub and you will be a very happy camper!

Both Technics and Sony alledgedly made some very nice sounding speakers also but I have yet to hear them so I cant say either way. REGARDS SNOW

True they would likely be even better in both regards if the crossovers were re done and or upgraded. 40HZ is the low limit on these due to the woofer crossover and cabinet size so even though it may get better bass wise with a refresh they will never be able to play real low I suppose but with a nice musical sub added they may well be the last speaker I buy they really are that good. snow 240 Posted April 29, 2013 Author Posted April 29, 2013 Very solid and built like a BSH. No doubt, at 68 lbs each for the monitor series and 85 lbs each for the home non M series they are very heavy for there relatively small size. REGARDS SNOW
