  1. Another. Cool. Srinath.
  2. Another pic. Cool. Srinath.
  3. The ribbons look like this when taken apart. Cool. Srinath.
  4. That's right, if you are going to be doing anything mechanical then you might as well cut or bang your finger right from the get go to satisfy the mechanical gods, lol. You wont lose a finger ... a finger nail maybe. The magnets are in repel position, they literally come apart as you unscrew. They are hard to put back - same reason - repel, but you can do it with longer bolts and 2X4's and zipties to help you. Cool. Srinath.
  5. I've dismantled a ribbon and I am pretty certain it has a few design flaws. 1. Magnets are glued in. And held in with repel force from the ones across the ribbon. But the adjacent ones are in attract. IMHO, we can improve on it in atleast that respect. Weld a square steel strip to the plate with threaded holes in it. Then drill holes in another strip to match it and countersink the holes on the side that faces the ribbon. Then use drilled neo magnets and mount em all the right way. That will prevent it from moving when you bump it and stuff. 2. No shielding from external metallic dust. Get too close to it with a staple in your hand and whoosh ... The drilled holes will allow you to put a muslin like cloth to keep it from doing that. Not a 100% ideal but better than the thing now. 3. We need to make a ribon (and there are guys on diyaudio that do em - though I am not sure how they would match up to the original) and we're good. Cool. Srinath.
  6. I found some classical yesterday. 10 records - all Deutsche Grammophon, 3 Liszt, 2 Sebelius, and 4 Brahms all box sets, with the book intact. Best bit ... $1.29 with tax. Cool. srinath.
  7. They did, - http://techtalk.parts-express.com/album.php?albumid=470&attachmentid=27152 I dont have one of those copies, I however have an electrovoice twist on the KHorn - same drivers, 4" shorter cabinet with a downfiring woofer. Apparently the regular KHorn needs to be put in a corner very very tight. These are way more forgiving, can even be stood parallel facing the room like a regular speaker. Let me see, I have not got the drivers in it yet. I plan on stuffing ti with altec VOTT components or a altec 421 + M1823 + T35 or other alternate components from the 50's meant for similar systems. Cool. Srinath.
  8. Is this Them ??? http://techtalk.parts-express.com/album.php?albumid=470&attachmentid=27150 Cool. Srinath.
  9. I have speakerlabs model P458 (I think) - either way they are Bose 901 series 1 copies. I didn't get the drivers that were in em, I just got cabs, and plan on stuffing em with 901 S1 drivers. But these are plywood and damn fine if you ask me. Way better than particle board 901 garbage. Also these came with big square magnet 901 copy drivers that didn't need an equalizer. Anyway speaker lab cabinets are great, I also have an EV driver filled set that is a speaker lab (likely) set. Cool. Srinath.
  10. Since I've threadjacked this one beyond recognition - let me finish the job - These are my speaker lab cabs - they have stickers that say speakerlab 458 - and a address in seattle, but I cant find a 458 in their catalogs - Enjoy - these are 3/4" plywood. The drivers - the guy sold em before I got a chance to see them even. Apparently for $80 for all 18 of em. I hate it when people are fools like that, and I am not the beneficiary ...
  11. You can get lucky buying 1/2 assed crap ... And you can get damn lucky selling 1/2 assed crap. So, last year I saw a guy put a set of bose 901 series 5 without equalizer for $60 on CL about 20 miles away. I was face down in vomit sick that night. And it was a whopping 10 F out. So I told a friend of mine to try to get it and he can have the pristine series 5 eq I have for trade of something ... I think a HK 930 he had. Anyway, that $60 had so many nuts calling him that the price climbed to 160 in short order. My friend long dropped out and it got sold to someone else @ 10 pm on a 10 degree night. So I have this mint condition eq for a 5 901 - I put a CL ad @ 10 pm and gave the seller my number - and the buyer of that 901 called me 11 pm. I blubbered something to the guy about tomorow. He called me the next day and bingo I had $90 if I recall for my eq. Nice, Paid $5 for it a year earlier. Fast forward to last month. I find a nice 901 series 6 without eq for $150 and buy it. Next day there hits on CL 2 series 6 eq's for $95 and $80. Boom, I pick one up. He he, what goes round come round eh ... Get this, story gets weirder ... I find beautiful 901 series 2 cabs. Pay $20 for em. Turns out he's the dad of the guy I bought the 6 eq from. I was just gonna block off the holes in the back and stuff it with infi kappa 5 drivers ... Then I find these are fake 901 cabs, and they are 3/4" plywood, not MDF and I find someone selling a series 2 901 with damaged cabs. I'm getting em tomorow and making up the 901 back to original. Better yet, I found stands for these @ value village, someone had bolted em together into a weird combination, $3.50 and the stands strong enough to support a 250# man. Non bose stands, but I like these over the bose one. You can get incomplete sheite and make out like a bandit ... I also got a tannoy 15" gold lancaster single, and traded it for a dynaco tube amp etc etc ... However you need patience, room and time and a patient wife/SO or be single. Infinity kappa 8's are pretty rare ... but I would be able to build em in a year or 2 maybe. Play the numbers man, you hit enough yard sale, estate sale, flea sale, goodwill, thrift and craigslist sale you'd find the pieces you need. You may end up with 1 piece in the end you'd have to either substitute or ebay. My Kappa 5.1's I pulled the emits out of em for my Reference four's. The kappa5.1's were missing 1 cover. Enough reason to delegate them to parts status and build the Ref 4. same drivers as the 5.1 but bigger cab. Cool. Srinath.
