  1. Eric Clapton @ 70, live (prerecorded) from Prince Albert Hall on PBS. Digital TV is not perfect, but has certainly improved the audio to a level that makes it very enjoyable to watch and listen to something like this over the Carver C-4000.
  2. Although I agree with much of what this article says, there is something that I think it misleads somewhat about. Although Les Paul is well known for his name on a Gibson guitar, he should be more widely celebrated for another technology that he brought to the music industry: multi track recording. Even though it was all analog, he realized that you could lay down a track, then play it back while laying down a different track. Then do that again, for as many tracks as you had available (initially 4, but very quickly 16 or more). So if there was a mistake at one part, just play it again on another track. This all was then downmixed to mono or stereo. Obviously not the ease and flexibility of modern digital, but certainly not do it all right the first time or do it all over.
  3. If my memory isnt failing me, much of the recording industry was using digital masters before CDs ever were on the market. But I think it was 24 bit, and it may have been sampled faster. So I think that vinyl was made from digital masters for a long time...
  4. Welcome to the site. Let me know if you want to let go of one of your old C-11s. I'm looking for my next project.
  5. For those of you that asked for a picture, I have one of my current system here on this computer. Any idea on how to post a picture on this forum using an old macbook?
  6. Thanks for the welcome everybody. I'll try to get a picture up of the current setup. But I had to put my first post up after pulling out the laptop, as for some reason my iPad doesn't want to display the forum right. Anyone have anything ideas about that? Pictures will be much easier with the iPad. On the delay board (I think Dennis asked), it's been out for at least 6 months now so obviously not really important. But I did like it sometimes for some recordings, but it is one of those things that you can overdo. When it is set right you really don't hear it, but if you turn it off you can tell that it is missing. But I only used it less than 10% of the time. I've been looking over the BillD mods info, and there sure are a lot of posts about this. I was a wondering something about this, did anyone ever mark up a schematic of what was changed? I am curious if the input impedance was changed for any of the opamps when going from the RC4136 to the OPA2134. I can figure it out from the parts lists, but a schematic would be nice if it is out there and I just haven't found it yet. Thanks again for the nice welcome.
  7. New guy here, Hi I have been a Carver user since sometime before 1980, when I bought my C-4000 and M400a. I also now have a TFM-42 and TX-2. I liked the C-4000 so much that when my first one was stolen after less than a year, I took the insurance money and went and bought another without even looking at anything else. Although I love the C-4000, it is certainly showing its age. I have had to fix it several times over the past five years or so, and currently the delay board is out awaiting repair, and something has gone haywire in the TT amp. And if you've ever worked on one of these, you know they are mechanically not the easiest to take apart and put back together. So looking around this site, I'm thinking of trying something else. Maybe I'll try to get a used C-1 and rework it. That seems to be a popular one here, and looks much simpler to work on. And I for one sometimes really enjoy the sonic holography, even though I know that opinion is not shared universally. So signing up to do some further research and share my experiences. Cheers and good sound.
