60in ribbons for Amazing Platinums

Recommended Posts

Hi all - very recent newcomer to Carver ownership here in the UK. I have just acquired Amazing IV Platinums but they have been fitted with 48in ribbons instead of 60in. Any guidance on where I can locate a pair of 60in ribbons, even a pair in need of rebuild? Even with the 48in they still sound really great, but they would look better with the correct ribbons in place. Many thanks for any input.

Welcome to the site. If it were me I would peruse craigslist and solicit the sellers to sell you just the ribbon portion and carefully ship them. There are regular postings of people selling amazings here in the United States. Money talks of course. Sooner or later someone will agree to it. You may have to run your own adsoliciting someone to sell you ribbons. Certainly not easy but with diligence it could happen. If you can buy another

complete set of speakers in the UK it would be your best bet. I firmly believe that the investment to rebuild those speakers is modest given the performance versus any current speakers on the market.they are simply phenomenal. You can also buy new Woofers from Dynavox. They are about to build another batch that would work for your speakers. Congratulations on your find of the world class Carver Amazings.

I have NOS OEM ribbons...  the problem is shipping... each come in a 10" x 10" x 68" box. Each box weighs about 35 pounds.
The shipping cost is usually almost as much as the new ribbon price.
See if you can arrange a good freight forwarder at a reasonable price at your end. Everything at my end seems really high.

The new ribbons are $750 ea. plus freight.

I keep telling you guys.... You need to get out more often.
There's 15 years of history over there.

Anyway... this is the rack of unbuilt ribbon parts. This doesn't include the 100 or so built ribbons I have.
We purchased all of the ribbon and crossover inventory as they were cleaning out the building.
Another week, and all of it would have been in the dumpster. 60's to the left... and 48's to the right.
Caps... Coils... Pots... I have it all.  Thumb up

There's 15 years of history over there, where do you think this place came from.

-***NO ARROGANT JABS, CAESAR !

-i'm a 'Senior' from your site, w/2,000+ posts and contributed my time/easily 6+inches of Owners manuals/Shop manuals/Yearly sales brochures w/specs & msrp's/Folded schematics...75% of you silver six/seven information came from my 'sealed' magazines....I tried to answer & help out, along w/learn along the way...I wish what happened, didn't

-Many of the 'Seniors' that left your place was because of Your Financials...Other 'Seniors', were ridiculed for posting their Amp, designs & modifications/proto types [that's really bad]...poorly ''treating tech's" ...There is more, but i do not wish to keep going there....Distancing those memories is my goal anymore

-Perfect example of why America succeeded from Great Britain...'WE' didn't need a stinkin emperor

I, too, know exactly how this place came about.

I don't believe we need to get out more.

Magnepan's ribbons are $400/set for brand new and they ship them in large cardboard tubes. I don't see why shipping $1500/set NOS ribbons couldn't be done in the same manner.

The newbie from the UK must be looking at these posts about Great Britain and scratching his head. ha ha that is just too funny. I didn't know anything about the history. It Didn't really come off as elitist to me but I get it. I sincerely hope this doesn't get worse.

Naaaaa..   Just letting the guy know there is more to Carver than what is here.
As for Maxx...  He's cute. I kind of miss the little guy.

And yes Steve, it's very possible, as long as the guy is willing to pay through the nose via UPS or FedEx.
They both think quite highly of their overseas service, and seem to want to be over-paid for it !!!
Like I said, he's better off finding a freight forwarder at his end to get them imported.

48" ribbons are no problem. USPS will take them for around $100-150 ea. But the dimensions of a 60" box are too large and USPS won't ship them. Then you're stuck with UPS or FedEx... and they KNOW IT !!

I also edited the other post as to not come off so cocky... It wasn't meant to be.d'oh!
For those that know me personally..  know I'm anything but.  eusa_angel.gif
