Tube preamplifier versus amplifier

Which is more important to have quality sound if one can afford only either one? Is it the tube preamp or the tube amp? How big diferrences between the two?

Preamp.Absolutely.
I proved this exact point ten years ago. I had a shop system- Toshiba CD player, Carver MXR-150 receiver and a nice little pair of Allison (AL-110's) bookshelf speakers. Sounded really good.
Then I bought a Conrad Johnson Premier 17-LS S2. Tried it in the first system I came across, well it was that shop system. I put The CJ in instead of the Carver pre section. WOW! Totally different sound. Crazy imaging, no harshness. It was nuts! Never have I heard such a radical change in sonic signature. The best word was "Unveiling", totally like I flipped off the Hi Cut and Low Cut switches. I just was in awe. I wanted to wrap myself up in that sound, it was so good. Definitely one piece I should have kept, but I needed to flip it.

So, yes, the preamp is the most important component. Choose wisely. Your ears are depending on you!

Yeah really want to try a CJ PV tube pre. Just gonna have to save to get oneBrick wall.

Depending on the model you were thinking of you may be better off saving for an Audio Research.

I've considered this unit as a fun and inexpensive way to play around.

Of course I have a few tube pre's still laying around that are soon to find their way to my system now that winter is rolling into town and I'm forced inside.
